Hines states in his forth step that political, social and economic consequences will flow from pursuit of the church's religious mission. From this, I am able to take out that Hines believes that the mission overflows into social concerns due to commitment to the defense of human dignity, promotion of human rights, fostering unity among members of the human family and discerning the deeper significance of human work and activity." (Hines, para 7) Hines uses the Vatican II to pose his position on political and economic issues being in clouded in church. Hines goes on to say, in his answer to question 15, that the church has limitations it needs to follow in order to keep the separation between church and state. I believe that there is a time and a place for religion to be involved in political uproar. In my opinion, these times may include a persons political position. One may choose to vote a specific way solely based on religious views. I also believe, however, that there is a reason why the separation of church and state is a widely known topic. There have been problems in the past where church and state conflict with each other causing more harm than good. Hines stated in his answer to question 15 that "we must remember that the constitutional separation of church and state means that organized religion will receive neither favor nor obstruction from the state." (Hines, para 11) Finally, Hines stated that nothing in the first amendment should be interpreted as separating the churches from society nor religion and morality from public life. Hines does not believe that the first amendment is keeping the two separated. Hines also stated in his answer to question 16 that there is no law against preaching politics. He goes on to state that good theology suggests that the role of the ministers is to help the congregation understand everything through gospel and hold onto the implications for their daily life.
Lewis stated that he knows that love is above all including hate. This is straight from the Bible. He brings his political views and religious views together to fight against the civil rights struggle. Lewis believes that faith will help change the direction and progress of the Nation. I do agree with Lewis in his views that religion should be seen more in political views. Who is to say that if we were truly "one Nation under God" that we wouldn't have the crime levels that we do? Also, if the entire world was able to come together and "love thy neighbor" that we wouldn't have world peace.
