Strategy implementation is more difficult than strategy formulation owing to the following 4 reasons:

1) Strategy formulation is just a planning task and its success is measured on the activity completion alone. But the strategy implementation and its success will be measured based on the business success achieved, which is comparatively harder.

2) Strategy formulation is a short-time activity, whereas implementation takes a long time. It is tough to maintain the same momentum throughout the journey.

3) Formulation involves just a few people. But implementation needs concurrence and support with all the stakeholders.

4) Strategy implementation is heavily dependent on the effectiveness of the change management process inside the organization. As a universal fact, every change management is a herculean task and this creates an influence and effect on strategy implementation.

Strategy formulation is process where organization define actions to achieve its goals. It is usually completed at the higher level in the organization and often not involving frontline staff.

When comes to implementation it has to be across the organization down to the entry level positions. Very often there is no alignment between departments because in the process of formulating they didn’t realize how it will affect relationships between departments.  It is not easy to track progress. Priorities are not the same for different areas of the organization and it is hard to aligned them. People are resistant to change and it requires great managerial skills to help them understand and stand behind it.

It is always easier to make something works on paper than in reality.

Strategy formulation is the process in which a company will determine how to attack a certain goal that they want to achieve. This means figuring out the what, who, when, where, and why for the goal and how to process it. It is what makes the strategy implementation process. Strategy implementation is to implement the strategy to get to the planned goal.

The reason why strategy implementations are maybe more difficult is that there is more to think about while implementing something. Coordination led by a great team of leaders is how a good plan will be put into place. Without communication and leadership, strategy implementation becomes very difficult.  For it to be successful, the strategy must be clearly defined and shared with anyone involved. Another reason why implementation is more difficult than formulation is that in most cases, it takes more money to implement change throughout the company. Overall, the whole process is difficult but we need to make sure strategy can be carried out correctly.

1) Why might strategy implementation be more difficult than strategy formulation?

First of all, I DO believe that strategy implementation is more difficult than strategy formulation.

think the first thing that comes to mind right away is that if you mess up from the beginning it is going to affect you down the line negatively. When you take a class at Walsh they always say week one and two are so important and then we build on that each week. Imagine taking a class at Walsh and just randomly jumping in at week 4 with no prior knowledge. Strategy formulation you already have the situation, numbers, and context of what is going on around you if you are formulating a plan down the line. If you are formulation a plan before it is more or less just a brainstorm session of ideas. While the implementation you do not, you are trying to implement a new strategy, or a new plan. The formulation process is almost like brainstorming or a rough draft, while the implementation is the actual test.

Thanks,
