DB 3: Big Idea

COLLAPSE

Top of Form

This prompt was a bit challenging because nothing jumped out at me right away as a BIG IDEA. I started on the path to getting my Masters two years ago not for the immediate career benefits but because it was a goal I set for myself before I turned a certain age. I am happy in my job for right now and while I would like to move into a more direct communications role in the future, I’m not quite ready to make that move just yet. So while I don’t really have a career BIG IDEA to share, instead I thought of this in terms of a project my husband and I have talked about for years. We’d like to start a school-based mentoring program that teaches etiquette, life skills, and financial savvy to middle and high-schoolers, primarily in low-income communities in our area. As part of the program launch, we would need to identify the target schools and then use research to customize program material to the unique needs of the program participants. For example, High School A has a large percentage of students on the free/reduced lunch program and has a higher than average dropout rate, so the school might be a good candidate for additional support and resources around the benefits of staying in school and making a plan for continuing education. As another example, my husband’s life was shaped by strong role models in his dad and grandfather, so he has a burden for young men without male leadership in their lives. If we could use surveys, polling, and other local or school district data, we could identify areas with a high concentration of single mother households and coordinate male mentors with these students.

Of course this is all very high-level and we both understand that this project will take a huge amount of effort to get off the ground, but there are some elements that we can be thinking about well in advance of taking any steps of our own. Tracking the success rate of other similar programs to note what works and doesn’t work, or writing out the framework for topics and lessons. I don’t know when or even if we’ll ever be able to launch this project, but it’s a BIG IDEA for our family.

The Lord has already given me during this COVID-19 my next BIG IDEA. It’s been on my heart for quite some time to create a devotion for women. Currently, I have a blog that inspires and encourages women that I connect with every Monday but, I’ve been wanting to go deeper. This devotional for women will be a 90-Day devotional that will help encourage women to see the value in themselves. In doing this devotional I will need to do some research to ensure that the devotional will be a success and impact as many women as possible. The first step in doing this is defining and getting to know my target audience. Doing research about your target audience can help you make sure that you're not wasting advertising dollars (Pejak, 2020). Since I already have a blog and have done some paid advertisement, it will be easy for me to do the research on the target audience. Facebook and Instagram allow for you to see the analytics on your audience. Also, to go a little deeper, I will research online what type of women purchase devotionals. Doing that will allow me to expand beyond my reach to ensure that I’m targeting the correct audience outside of my established audience. Another form of research that I plan to do before writing is doing mini zoom meetings with women just to hear their experiences. This would be similar to doing focus groups just to hear their opinions on some of the topics that will be covered in the devotional.

Another step I would take in using the insight I gathered from that research to ensure that I’m reaching that audience. Understanding the target audience will help me to understand which problems they may be dealing with. I want to be able to reach my audience and connect with them on a deeper level. Understanding what problems my audiences are facing will help fulfill a need that the audience might be having. (Hoyer, MacInnis & Pieters, 2018). Being able to have a devotional catered to my audience is something that will make for a successful book. With understanding where they come from it will help with my writing. As a writer I want to connect with my reader’s hearts. This all starts with understanding the people who will possibly ready your book. Knowing the information about my audience will allow me to take action on a strategic campaign to reach them. I’m a firm believer of meeting people where they are in whatever aspects of their lives, they are in.

In 1 Timothy 4:14 in the New International Version it states, Do not neglect your gift, which was given you through prophecy when the body of elders laid their hands on you. In this moment that we are all in it is so important that we don’t neglect our gifts. Someone might be waiting for that book you are trying to write. Someone might be depending on that creative idea that you have.
