Unit 6 DB: Rhetorical Appeals Analysis

Responses:

In your responses, consider the advertisment chosen by your classmates. If you were writing a critical review of the advertisement, what is one area you think that the advertisement could be improved upon? Why?

SHEREE’S POST:

Hello Everyone ,

The popular product that I chose was "Food".

Logos: The advertisement was good, they use megan thee stallion on the popeys with her sauce that make peole want to go try it out and go eat there. People love great deals and will go because the deal and thee stallion. Its also catches alot of customers sttention.

Pathos:After viewing the advertisarer it make people want to go out and eat food and good food like popeys, like today i went to popeys and tried the new sauce and it was alsome make me want me .

Ethos: What made me trust them ? was seeing how everyone was loving them and go to them all the time . they explain everything and have good advertiment , they special are great and the keep it clean .

ROSA’S POST:

Hello everyone,

The popular product that I chose was "Planet Fitness"

Logos: The advertisement was great, they used actriz Linsay Lohan and the famous basketball player Dennis Rodman, to get the attention of people to want to watch it when they see someone famous in it. They also have an amazing special to sign up $1.00 down and $10.00 A month cancel any time is another way to catch consumers' attention to sell a product.

Pathos: The way they had people using the fitness machines and using the man in the bike to be happy to get the $10.00 deal, I thought was nice to see someone so excited to get a great deal these days, with so many things going up no one can beat that offer.

Ethos: What made me trust them was seeing how they explain the special offer and the option to cancel at any time,  It is great to have that as an option and not have to commit to a contract. The only thing I didn't like was not showing the entire gym including their sauna and other equipment that would have given the consumer a  better alternative to convince them how big the facility is, but I still think is a great deal.

SHAMEKA’S POST:

Workplace Diversity is important because it is based on making tomorrow different, acknowledging the individual strengths of each employee and the potential they bring and valuing the differences of others is what ultimately brings us all together and can be the secret to a successful, thriving workplace and a fair work culture. Diversity can also be about respecting individual differences that will benefit the workplace and creating a competitive edge and increasing work productivity. It benefits associates by creating a fair and safe environment where everyone has access to opportunities and challenges. Diversity drives creativity and innovation. The diverse workplace is more likely to understand your customer's needs and come up with ideas to fulfill them.

Two specific challenges managers may face in managing diversity and inclusion... 1. Communication barriers 2. Productivity for diversity challenges;  1. Cultural misunderstandings 2. Discrimination for Inclusion challenges. so basically for both diversity and inclusion is communication issues and how I would go about solving each of these two is using clear language, avoid slang terms and negative expressions. Also with inclusion included with diversity, I need to have respect for everyone in the workpace because it stands to benefit performance and working conditions. Making sure that I am compliant.

LAKISHA’S POST:

Diversity is very important in the workplace because individuals from different backgrounds, cultures, and nationalities can bring different perspectives and ideas to the workplace which can open opportunities for the organization. Diversity in the workplace can offer different styles of creativity, be able to connect to other markets, and grab the attention of customers from other cultures that sees that your company stands for something positive. Diversity helps businesses to adapt to the new. New ways of learning, new ways of thinking and new ways to engage strategic planning. By listening to a variety of ideas from individuals with different backgrounds it enhances an organizations competitive advantage and the capability to long term success.

Communication and an individuals work ethics can be a big obstacles for managers in a workplace that engages in diversity and inclusion. As a manager I  would do research on the different cultures to make sure what words one can say or what gestures mean what so that My employees and I wont offend anyone by a mistake of not knowing or caring to find out. I would also offer some training to avoid social challenges in the workplace. I would put in the effort to learn basic words of ones language to better communicate with an employee who knows little or no English.

INSTRUCTOR’S POST:

Thank you for your post.

Can you name a company that is performing in accordance with the statements in your first paragraph? Did your research reveal any exemplars?

Best regards

MY POST:

Workplace diversity is important because it increases productivity. Diversity brings employees that have diverse perspectives and experiences. Diverse employees can generate more ideas and increase the productivity of their firms. Workplace diversity also improves cultural awareness. Individuals can gain cultural awareness by interacting with those who come from other cultural groups. Workplace diversity also improves a company’s reputation. Companies with diverse workplaces are thought to be better employers. Many individuals are likely to join companies with diverse employees. Companies can attract more customers and potential investors when they value workplace diversity. They can understand their customers better because the diverse workforce represents people from different societies. Workplace diversity leads to higher innovation, creativity, faster problem-solving, and better decision-making. It also leads to high employee engagement and reduced turnover.

The two specific challenges managers face in managing diversity are communication barriers and unconscious biases. Communication issues are common in diverse teams. They can be caused by differences in communication preferences and styles. Some people might speak the same language, but there might be variations in accents. For example, there are variations between Australian, British, and American English. Poor communication might lead to mistrust and unintentional offenses. Managers would want to make the employees feel welcome, but the communication issues might be a challenge to inclusion. Another challenge is unconscious biases. Managers would want to do things the way they have been done. They might not want to implement changes such as workplace diversity. Managers might be having unconscious biases. The unconscious biases make them avoid employees that come from specific groups. Some of the unconscious biases include believing that men should take charge while women should be fragile. Some managers might be biased against members of minority groups. They might not want to include some people due to the belief that members of a particular group should not hold various positions.

Companies rely on their ads to draw in customers to buy their product. They need to make it persuasive and relatable. I chose one of the many Subaru vehicle company ads because I find them enjoyable. They use a family of dogs driving their vehicles to make them seem human but also have the characteristics of dogs. Obviously, I am a dog person, so I am automatically interested. They make me laugh and they use situations that humans go through. It could be problematic due to if a person is not into dogs and is just uninterested.

The second advertisement is for a type of birth control. The first time I heard it, it caught me way off guard. I do not think that a commercial using the words it does should be played on TV where children can easily hear it. I understand that it is a woman’s body part, but I do not think it should be used on a commercial. I think the Subaru commercial succeeds because it provides humor with trying to sell their vehicle. They say their vehicles are “dog approved” which is providing humor. The second advertisement for the birth control in my opinion is just too much and catches people off guard more than persuades them to buy the product.

This is a commercial for IKEA during the pandemic. They were trying to encourage people to stay at home and list the reasons why home is so important. They make the advertisement as if your house is speaking to you and evokes emotions of what a home provides such as where children grown up, where you take shelter from the bad, where you share good news, and where you can be yourself. I think it was effective because it brings to a person’s attention what home is and why it is important.

CORINNE’S POST:

This ad does persuade me due to the comedy in it. This advertisement is to promote the Amazon Echo Dot. In promoting the ad appeals using pathos by using comedy. It is funny to watch the user continually use the echo dot because it appears and sounds like Michael B Jordan, even though the woman's husband does not enjoy it as much. I prefer this kind of ad (one linked) more than something more straightforward with just a picture and description of the device. I do not see anything wrong with the ad as it covers the functionality of the device as well as its name of it.

I found this part of the assignment quite comical since you had to do some research in order to find some failed ads. In 2021 Burger King was using their Twitter social media handle to advertise their "cooking scholarship for female employees"(Content Works Agency, 2021). In a tweet, BurgerKingUK tweeted "Women belong in the kitchen." This truly shocked me so much that I just started laughing at how bad it is. While yes this ad was to cater to the women who were participating in the scholarship fund it just came out so bad. We know this failed because Burger King set out an official apology as well as deleted the original tweet.

It is pretty clear as to why one ad succeeded over the other. While yes not all people find comedy appealing it was still better than Burger King's epic fail of a tweet. Comedy tends to make people talk about the product when talking about the ad. Comedy is also memorable! While I will forever remember BK's failed advertising it is not a good memory.

This campaign was a success for Denmark's local bars. The idea of the campaign was based on the midst of COVID-19. Many local businesses and bars suffered so the Danish Bartender Association helped support the Carlsburg Adopt-a-Keg Campaign. People would use smartphones to scan Carlsburg products to begin filling their "virtual keg". Users would be rewarded with credits to bars or restaurants once everything was reopened. I believe this campaign was successful because it gave people a little joy and fun to participate in while struggling with some of the hardest times. This was an incentive to keep people buying Carlsberg products as well as helping local businesses in the future. A win-win for both teams!
