Reflective Revision Assignment Guidelines

Due: Nov 13 Submit the full assignment in class in hardcopy. Additionally, submit the 500-word reflection document as a Word document on Blackboard (labelled as “yoursurname_RR.docx”)

Weight: 25% of your final grade

In this assignment, you will first reflect on and analyze the improvements made in your writing over this term, and then revise two of your workshop assignments. One of your two revisions must be a persuasive message, from WW 4 or 5.

Preparation:

Use your understanding of the writing principles discussed this term to critically analyze the pieces you have completed (WW assignments 1-5 and the Writing Test). Your analysis will consider the specific purposes and audiences of each piece of writing and their impact on language choice, document design, content, and organization. Your analysis will also consider all feedback on your writing (from the instructor as well as from your peers). Remember that your instructor’s feedback has often been provided in class rather than individually. You may want to review your class notes and the PPT slides.

Product:

For this assignment, you will complete three pieces of writing:

1) One 500-word (+/- 5%) reflection and self-analysis: Based on your analysis of your writing, as well as the feedback you received from your peers and the instructor, select two or three of the writing concepts that have been a challenge for you this semester. For example, you might select you-attitude or document design, if these concepts posed a challenge.

Construct a thoughtful and specific 500-word analysis of the two or three points of progress (or challenge) you selected. Your reflection and self-analysis will demonstrate that you have thoroughly reviewed your writing, as well as the feedback your writing received. Your observations should align with your work and the feedback on that work; you should feel free to disagree with your peers’ feedback as long as you are able to provide valid reasoning for your disagreement. You should support your points with brief examples from your writing (point to your original work, located in the appendix, rather than inserting the examples into this document).

Most importantly, you should ensure that you provide an analysis of your progress or challenges rather than simply listing the changes that you have made in your revised documents.

Insert a word count at the bottom of this document.

2) Two revised documents: Choose two workshop assignments, one of which must be a persuasive message (from WW 4 or 5). The Writing Test cannot be used for this assignment. Revise these two documents, demonstrating mastery of all communication principles discussed this term, regardless of the feedback received on the original. Keep in mind that the feedback provided on early work will not have considered principles discussed later in the term.

Format:

Your assignment should be submitted in hardcopy in class on Nov 13. Upload a copy of your 500-word reflection (but not the other documents) on BB – before class.

The document you submit in class will include the following items, in this order, and each on a separate page:

1. A title page, including the title of the assignment, your name, the course name and number, and the instructor’s name.

2. A 500-word (+/- 5%) reflection. Include a title and use effective page design, following the guidelines given in class and on the rubric. Insert a word count at the bottom.

3. Your two revised documents, each on a separate page, with no other text (for example, no assignment names) on the pages. Each document should appear ready to be sent to the intended audience.

4. An appendix with copies of the original, unedited WW assignments. These original copies should be clearly labelled as the originals, and comments made by peers and the instructor should be copied at the base of each original. Any documents used as examples within the reflection must also be included in the appendix (for example, if you refer to your writing test in the reflection and self-analysis, and you revise WW2 and WW5, your appendix will include your writing test along with the original WW2 and WW5).

Grading:

The marking guidelines for this assignment are attached separately on BB.
