FYES Reflective Essay Assignment

Purpose of the Assignment

The purpose of the Reflective Essay is for students to examine their growth over the past semester and identify how this will aid them in reaching their short and long term goals. Students are encouraged to take this opportunity to think critically about what has brought them to college and how they plan to move forward professionally through their time at Atlanta Technical College. This reflection may also involve consideration of factors outside of education, such as personal responsibilities and motivations that impact these goals. We have covered several topics this semester that should be viewed as strategies for success that students may implement in their college careers and beyond. Reviewing these tools through your notes and textbook may help you to understand how they fit into your professional journey.

Directions

Step one: Read over these guidelines and any notes pertaining to those strategies covered in this course which you feel will be most helpful moving forward in your education and professional career.

Step two: Write your reflection essay about what you have learned about yourself and your goals this semester. It may help students to keep in mind the following questions:

· What brought you to Atlanta Technical College? What motivated you to pursue the program in which you are enrolled?

· What skills did you hope to gain from this course? Do you feel as if you have done this? How do you plan on implementing the information from this course to ensure success in future classes?

· What are your main short and long term goals? How did you come to these goals and how do you plan on achieving them?

Step three: Read over your paper before turning it in; it is recommended you do this several times. Make sure your paper is well-organized, contains at least three paragraphs (Introduction, Body, and Conclusion), and has correct spelling and grammar. Since this is a reflection essay, you will be using the first person throughout your writing (using “I”), but this does not mean that this assignment should be viewed as casual.

General Requirements & Deadlines

· Must be at least three pages typed, double spaced, in 12 point Times New Roman font with standard margins

· Proper grammar, spelling, punctuation, syntax, etc. (i.e., well-written)

· As you are not required, nor expected, to consult any outside sources there is no need to include a Work’s Cited page. However, if you do use ANY information from a source outside of your notes and/or textbook (or if you directly quote your textbook or any other source), you are required to use proper citation and include a Works Cited page. For further information on citation, use the Blackboard link to the Purdue OWL found under the Reflective Essay folder.

· DO NOT PLAGIARIZE. Plagiarism will NOT be accepted and WILL result in a zero on this assignment. If you need any help, contact me to set up a meeting.
