After creating and reviewing the data about both marriage and poverty within different gender and racial groups. I found it very interesting that married couples take up the majority of the financial demographics. I would not have guessed that this would be the case. I can understand that there is going to be both highs and lows within this group, but not that they are across the board the majority shareholders. It comes as no surprise to me that both gender and ethnicity have a strong affect upon poverty as well as wealth. With lower marriage rates among the non-white races comes more single parent families. When you have a single parent family it is very hard to keep up or stockpile money. This is due to not having time for a well-paying job. But also, if you can make the time for a well-paying job the added expense of putting the child or children into day care might offset the higher income. There is also the social aspect of the lack of pressure from your surroundings to join into marriage. The need for assistance in both child care and education needs to be addressed by the government to help change this around. This would help out with not only less poverty but would help elevate marriage rates. More financial security makes for much more stability between couples. There is in some races much higher rates of marriage even though they also have high poverty rates. An example of this is Latino’s, they have a high poverty rate, yet they have the third highest marriage rate. This comes directly from social and racial pressures and beliefs from within their own race. This is the direct opposite of the black race. They have the highest poverty rate as well the lowest marriage rate. This is due to their SES as well as they low social pressure from within their own group. This assignment was fairly eye opening to me. I never really put much thought into these types of topics, that is until participating in this class. I have for the most part just gone about my life as best as I can up till now. But I find that I have come up with more interest in how the world and humans work together. I believe that this is due to me just not really wanting to think of these issues, both blind to these issues as well as not keeping up with the current news. I find the state of the world and news is pretty depressing as well as skewed to who owns the news station. I can see that by entering the nursing world that I am going to encounter these issues much more frequently than I have in my earlier life. I feel that I have very accurately assimilated the information from this assignment.
