Definition of a Proposal

A proposal is an offer made by an individual or group to provide a service or product or carry out research. It is a request made to carry out a certain activity that benefits the individual or other people. Most projects, small or big, require drafting a proposal to request assistance or permission.

Classifications of Proposals

Proposals can be classified into two categories, i.e., internal and external proposals. Internal proposals are submitted within one's organization as a request to carry out an activity that will benefit the organization. The proposal may be a request to carry out research, purchase a product, or change a policy. External proposals are submissions made to other organizations. Often, external proposals are made to outsource services that the organization does not have. Companies rarely can produce all products or offer all services required. The company may require organizations with the resources and expertise to compete by submitting proposals showing they deserve the contract. External proposals can either be unsolicited or solicited. Solicited proposals are often responses to requests from customers. The organization or individual proposing waits for an invitation by the company before placing it. Unsolicited proposals are placed by organizations or individuals before the prospective customer makes a request. The organization placing the proposal determines that a customer will require a particular service and places a request to provide it.

Deliverables of Proposals

The actual deliverable will be the report submitted to the organization that owned the research process. Such requests are scrutinized, and when approved, the research organization begins the research. The researcher makes periodic progress reports and provides a recommendation report at the end. Goods and services proposals are made as a request to supply a tangible product or service.

Components of a Proposal Structure

A proposal contains a summary covering the major elements in a few words. The summary is followed by an introduction that helps the reader understand its organization, scope, and context. The proposal contains a plan of work that details the activities the individual or organization intends to do. It includes a section on qualifications and experience that demonstrated your ability to do the project. The proposal specifies through a budget the amount of money the project will cost. Lastly, the proposal has an appendix containing essential items such as charts, maps, images, testimonials, etc., that are not included in other parts.
