Step 1 - Self-Esteem Check: The most important relationship you have is with yourself. The way you feel about yourself impacts your communication and perspectives, which also shape your relationships with others. In this class we are going to begin by learning more about ourselves. This assignment is difficult, many of us have not considered such intimate details about ourselves. Everyone has things they critique about themselves, and moments where we judge ourselves by others standards. This assignment is intended to help you assess your self esteem by applying Self discrepancy theory to better understand the pieces that shape your self-esteem, while looking for ways to make your self-esteem higher. You should use the directions on page 42 of the textbook to assess your self esteem: 1) Make a list of your (positive and negative) beliefs, attitudes, and values that make up your self-concept. 2) Analyze your ideal self - Who do you wish you were? Is this attainable, or is it unrealistic? What, if anything, would you need to change? Would it truly create satisfaction, or would expectations simply escalate further? 3) Analyze your ought self - Who do others want you to be? What would you need to do to become this person? If you did all of those things would others be satisfied, or increase expectations? 4) Analyze for any discrepancies and start to consider how you might reconcile any discrepancies. If the expectations are unrealistic, try to redefine the standards. Keep this for yourself and feel free to share anything you feel comfortable sharing with me.
Step 2 - In class Body Mapping Activity to further process and de-brief the observations made in Step 1.
Step 3 - Journal Reflection on Self-Esteem
For this assignment, I want you to reflect on the process of these steps. What did you learn about yourself? How did you feel about your self prior to the two activities? How did you feel afterwards? What insights did you gain? How did the application of Self-Discrepancy theory and Body Mapping activity shape your experience completing this assignment? How could you apply other concepts from Chapter 2 or the Meditation Readings. Did you see any particular connections between course content (awareness, mindfulness, self-concept, The Johari Window, Social Penetration Theory, media influence, or social identities, etc.)? For this assignment you will write a 2-3 page written reflection. This will be worth 50 points. Your grade will be based on the following questions:
1. Did you reflect on engaging the Self-Esteem Check and Body Mapping? Did you share feelings that arose completing the assignment and main take-aways? Did you exemplify a deep engagement with the activities? (10 points)
2. Did you explain how, if at all, the way you viewed yourself shifted after completing the assignment? Did you exemplify a deep self-reflection? (10 points)
3. Did you clearly link at least two course concepts to your reflection? Did you show a deep engagement with the material? Is it clear that you are applying the concepts to your experience? I don’t want to see a regurgitation of definitions, I want to see you showing me the concepts within your experience. (25 points)
4. Did you proofread? (5 points)
