How can Binary Categorization influence Human Beings

Categorization can be dangerous and unfair because people who creates those categories, which are the people with money and power, does not consider the diversity of human beings and stereotypes that are already existing. Binary categorization contains both positive and negative values. Roxanne Gay, who holds a Ph.D in rhetoric and thechnical communication from Michigan Technologiucal University, talks in her article about how categorization does not allow for the complexities of human experience or individuality. She discusses that the problem is not feminist but categorizing people inside social justice movements. Julia Serano, who studies in biochemistry and molecular biophysics at Columbia University, mainly talked about the problem of “predator/prey” mindset, and some other words of binary categorization. Both authors talked about the problems that binary categorization might bring. Binary categorization forces people into one category, a part of people’s identity will be removed in order for them to fit into the category perfect. Another problem is that it can bring bad damages to others even though it might be harmless to ourselves. However, binary categorization can sometimes give people a clear direction of which way they want to choose.

A negative value that binary categorization have is that people have to leave a part of their personality to fit into one of the categories.
