The stereotyping of individuals or groups of individuals based on their age.
Age Discrimination
The Age Discrimination Act of 1975
Prohibits discrimination based on the age in any program that receives federal assistance.
The Age Discrimination Employment Act of 1967
Protect some applicants and employees from discrimination on the basis of age in hiring, promotion, firing, compensation and benefits.
The Truth
Age discrimination does take place in hiring
The lawsuits to prove discrimination are hard to win, and generally not successful as long as a ‘qualified’ candidate was selected.
Ageism and age discrimination reduce the available economic opportunities for older adults

Conclusion
As the segment of the population over 65 yrs of age expands we need to be aware of ageism
We should be aware of how ageism can impact us during the aging process
We should view this segment of our population as a natural resource, and source of wisdom rather than something to be ridiculed.
