To begin, you will need to either create an account for yourself on Wikipedia or register yourself on Wikipedia.
Visit Wikipedia.com and look for the "Log In" link in the top right hand corner of the page. After you have completed this step, a new page will load where you may register for an account.

Gaining Access to the Sandbox
Find the tab labeled "Sandbox" that is located to the right of your login, and click on it. You may practice creating and modifying Wikipedia articles in the Sandbox, which is a personal editing sandbox that you have access to.
Changing the Format of a Wikipedia Page While in Sandbox
Look around the user interface. There is a menu of quick formatting choices located in the top left corner of the Sandbox (Bold, Italic, Insert Link or Picture, etc.).
You may start writing on the large blank area that is located below the toolbar.
At the bottom, you will find a greater variety of choices. You have the ability to input special characters as well as add citations.
