Before you begin, read  Sound Writing  3.7 Using Quote Sandwiches (Links to an external site.) .

1. Choose a quotation from Hempel or Gilbert that you think you’ll use in Essay 2. (Pick a different quote than the one you used in Monday’s (yesterday’s) homework).

2. Create a quote sandwich using the format described in Sound Writing:

Upper bun: Introduces the quotation with information about its author/source and the claim you're making about it.

EXAMPLE Canadian-American sports journalist Oluo agrees. As she writes in Seattle Magazine…

Meat/tofu: Quotation with a proper in-text citation.

EXAMPLE “Blah” ( Oluo 7).

Bottom bun: Your thorough analysis of the evidence.

EXAMPLE Here, Oluo highlights the conflict for Canadian transplants to Seattle, “torn” between their love for their home country’s teams and Seattle’s brand-new franchise.

Here’s what your quote sandwich will look like when fully assembled:

Canadian-American sports journalist Grace Oluo agrees. As she remarks in Seattle Magazine, “Maple Leafs or the Kraken? I’m torn” ( Oluo 7). Here, Oluo highlights the conflict for Canadian transplants to Seattle, “torn” between their love for their home country’s teams and Seattle’s brand-new franchise.
