Purchase evaluation of an MRI machine

A purchase evaluation process is needed especially when purchasing an important piece of equipment such as the MRI machine.

The purpose of this process is to ensure that the equipment bought meets the need, is of good quality and that it will offer value for money.

The purchase evaluation process to be applied will be done in 5 steps as will be described below:

2

Any equipment used in the health care sector is very sensitive since it is used to for health purposes of population served (Johnson, Zhang, Patel, Keselman, Tang & Turley, 2005). Owing to this factor there is need to ensure that the right equipment is procured to meet the specific need and meet it to standards. The purchase evaluation process serves the purpose of ensuring this is done and that quality and value for money is delivered to an organization after a purchase.

Process steps of purchase evaluation

Recognition of need within the organization

A product cannot be purchased aimlessly, there has to be some need it is set to meet. Identification of the need is critical as it can help guide on the specific characteristics that the machine should have.

Search for information

This step will engage looking for information about the different MRI machine products in the market that can help meet the identified need.

3

The first stage is the stage where the problem that warranties the need for the machine is identified. It is important to ensure that the need is accurately and comprehensively identified since this information helps to set the standards which the machine should meet. Accuracy will be emphasized in this stage to ensure that the right machine with the right characteristics depending on the need is procured for effectiveness and to avoid wasting resources.

Information search is required to know the choices one has of MRI equipment to purchase from that is the MRI machines available in the market. Information can be gotten from manufacturers, magazines, news papers and the internet among many other sources.

Evaluation of choices

With information on the machines that are available for purchase to meet the need, this step now involves evaluating each of the choice. The evaluation will be done on the basis of which of the available choices best meets the need identified, within the budget and in consideration of time value of  money (Gapenski & Pink , 2007).

Purchase

At this stage one has information on the machine that is best according to the criteria and where it can be found and in this stage the machine is procured.

4

The evaluation stage simply involves narrowing down the choices found in the information search. The criteria to be used in this case is how well the machine meets the need or the characteristics informed by the need stage, the budget set and time value of money. This stage generally involves comparing one choice with others until the best is picked. Those that do not meet the criteria in this stage will be eliminated and the best picked for purchase (Liedes & Liimatainen, 2010).

Purchase is then the next stage where the best machine is now physically procured. All important documents of the machine must be acquired at this stage for example a valid warranty.

Evaluation after purchase

This stage involves an assessment of the product procured on the basis of its quality, time value of money and its ability to meet the need identified.

At this stage one just tries to practically affirm that they made the right decision and that the product purchased is the right fit for the organizational need that was to be met.

At this stage the machine will also be observed to determine whether it is in perfect condition or if it is in any way faulty (Liedes & Liimatainen, 2010).

5

This final stage involves assessing the performance of the machine to see whether it is in good condition or to ensure it has no fault and also to ensure that the right decision was made by checking how well the MRI machine will meet the needs it was bought to meet.
