PROSODY EXERCISES

Scan the following lines for foot, meter, and rhyme scheme:

The garden blooms and soothes the bees, for spring is here

The sky is blue, the grass is green, the air is clear

A world of dreams begins to stir my heart

With hopes, so now the ghosts depart.

Casting shadows over islands, pouring curses over oceans,

Spreading bane on lakes and forests, hunters always blight their journey.

When the beauty will fade in the darkness of pain, in the depth of the past

Then the mind will awake to the music of love

That resides in the womb of the earth.

Hundreds of soldiers are laying their

Lives at the call of their leaders, but

Leaders sit back from the fray and then bask in indifference.

The thunder is bursting, the lightning is rolling, but people

Are scrambling for apples and peaches,

Their eyes are on prizes and pleasant surprises,

But deserts are waiting to swallow and gobble the orchards.

Enough of rage, enough of hate, it’s time to heal the wound,

Indeed, it’s time to sing and dance and make a rhyme.

Whenever the darkness erases the sequence

Of wonder and hunger, and stars are amorphous

And nebulous stretches of numbness, then callous

Or hurtful expressions can carry no cons’quence.

In the dawn of the movement the light is endearing, the hope

And the promise are huge in their scope.
