My teaching approach.

Student-centered learning.

Exploration and curiosity.

Critical thinking and expression (Johnston et al., 2011).

Cultural sensitivity and respect.

Support growth mindset development.

Encourage student ownership of education.

In my teaching philosophy, I believe that students should be at the center of the learning process to foster meaningful learning experiences. To that end, I intend to support student growth mindset development, create opportunities for student-driven learning, and encourage students to take ownership of their education. The key to meaningful and lifelong learning is a student-centered learning approach. In my teaching philosophy, I emphasize the importance of student-centered learning. This means that students are involved in their own learning process and have a say in what they learn and how they learn it. It is important to create an environment that encourages exploration, curiosity, and critical thinking (Johnston et al., 2011). To foster this type of learning, I believe that it is important to create an accepting and inclusive environment where all students feel comfortable expressing themselves and their ideas. I also strive to foster a culture that values cultural sensitivity and respect, as students come to my class with diverse experiences, background knowledge, and learning styles.

Constructivism Theory

Constructivism is a school of thought (Haittie, 2012).

Experiences, exploration, and interaction are important.

Meaningful learning experiences enable connections.

Knowledge is created and situated in consciousness.

Strategies such as station rotation and scaffolding are used.

Read-alouds, modeling, and differentiated instruction are used.

Constructivism is a school of thought that holds that people learn through their experiences, exploration, and interaction with their surroundings (Hattie, 2012). The teacher’s role is to design meaningful learning experiences that allow students to make meaningful connections between new learning and prior knowledge. Constructivism is concerned with the concept of knowledge as being created and situated in human consciousness. Constructivism is a powerful school of thought that emphasizes the importance of learning through experiences, exploration, and interaction. The stresses the importance of meaningful learning experiences that allow students to make connections between new learning and prior knowledge. It also views knowledge as something that is created and situated in human consciousness. As a teacher, I strive to create meaningful learning experiences that allow students to make connections between the material and their own lives. To do this, I use various strategies, such as the station rotation model for content area instruction and scaffolding techniques. I also use read-alouds, modeling, and differentiated instruction to ensure that students’ literacy skills improve.

Sociocultural theory

Social interaction important in learning (Hattie, 2012).

Creating safe classroom environment.

Discussing beliefs and ideas.

Discussing social issues and diversity.

Encouraging critical thinking and justice.

Creating deep learning environment.

The sociocultural theory emphasizes the importance of social interaction and cultural practices in learning (Hattie, 2012). I work hard to make my classroom a safe place for students to respectfully discuss their ideas and beliefs while providing opportunities for critical discourse. Students come to class with a wide range of cultural experiences and backgrounds. The sociocultural theory is a powerful school of thought that emphasizes the importance of social interaction and cultural practices in learning. In my classroom, I strive to create a safe and welcoming environment where students can openly discuss their ideas and beliefs and engage in meaningful conversations about identity and culture. To do this, I use literature to discuss social issues and diversity, giving students insight into various points of view on various topics. I also value and encourage critical thinking, deep conversations, and equity and justice. To ensure that these objectives are met, I create a learning environment that incorporates the previously mentioned theorists’ theories and encourages meaningful, deep learning.

How these theories have shaped my presentation

Create meaningful learning experiences.

Respectful critical discourse opportunities.

Focus on student-centered learning.

Use station rotation model.

Provide scaffolding techniques.

Create culturally supportive environment.

These theories have shaped my approach to creating an effective professional development workshop on how to create a culturally supportive literacy environment in the classroom. My goal is to provide educators with the tools they need to create an environment where students are respected and supported. I plan to use research-based instructional strategies and activities to help teachers create a classroom that values cultural sensitivity and respect. The theories discussed in my presentation have shaped my approach to creating an effective professional development workshop on how to create a culturally supportive literacy environment in the classroom. My goal is to provide educators with the tools they need to create an environment where students are respected and supported. From my teaching philosophy, I believe that students should be at the center of the learning process, and as a result, I plan to use strategies such as the station rotation model for content area instruction and scaffolding techniques. From constructivism, I plan to create meaningful learning experiences that allow students to make meaningful connections between new learning and prior knowledge. Finally, from the sociocultural theory, I plan to create a safe place for students to respectfully discuss their ideas and beliefs while providing opportunities for critical discourse.

How these theories have shaped my presentation

Create classroom valuing cultural sensitivity.

Research-based instructional strategies (Fisher, 2016).

Teach literacy skills.

Create strong student bonds.

Encourage critical thinking.

Provide space for deep conversations.

My presentation will provide teachers with the tools they need to create a classroom environment that values cultural sensitivity and respect. I plan to use research-based instructional strategies and activities to help teachers create a classroom that values cultural sensitivity and respect (Fisher, 2016). My presentation will discuss the importance of teaching literacy skills and how to create an environment where students can form strong bonds and take ownership of their learning. Finally, my presentation will discuss how to create an environment that encourages critical thinking and deep conversation about assigned readings by providing a space in which these activities can flourish. My presentation will provide teachers with the tools they need to create a classroom environment that values cultural sensitivity and respect. I plan to use research-based instructional strategies and activities to help teachers create a classroom that values cultural sensitivity and respect. My presentation will discuss the importance of teaching literacy skills such as phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension. Additionally, I plan to discuss the importance of creating an environment where students can form strong bonds and take ownership of their learning. Through the use of literature, song lyrics, and magazines, I will discuss how to create an environment that encourages critical thinking and deep conversation about assigned readings by providing a space in which these activities can flourish.

My understanding about what it means to be a child of color in today’s schools

Creating culturally sensitive classroom environment.

Encouraging critical thinking and conversation.

Using literature to discuss social issues.

Teaching literacy skills.

Forming strong student bonds.

Taking ownership of learning (Saenz, 2015).

In my professional development workshop, I will be addressing the topic of what it means to be a child of color in today’s schools. This is an essential topic to discuss, as it is vital to recognize and understand the unique experiences and challenges that children of color face in today’s classrooms. I will discuss the importance of creating a culturally supportive environment in the classroom. I believe that it is important for teachers to create an environment where all students feel respected and supported. This means that teachers should strive to create an accepting and inclusive environment where all students feel comfortable expressing themselves and their ideas. Additionally, teachers should strive to foster a culture that values cultural sensitivity and respect, as students come to the classroom with diverse experiences, background knowledge, and learning styles. Next, I will discuss how teachers can foster a sense of belonging and acceptance in their classrooms (Saenz, 2015). To do this, I believe that teachers must recognize the importance of social interaction and cultural practices in learning. Teachers can do this by using literature to discuss social issues and diversity, giving students insight into various points of view on various topics. Additionally, teachers should value and encourage critical thinking, deep conversations, and equity and justice. By engaging in meaningful discourse and reading materials, teachers can create an environment where students can form strong bonds and take ownership of their learning. Finally, I will discuss how to create an environment that encourages critical thinking and deep conversation about assigned readings by providing a space in which these activities can flourish. I believe that it is important for teachers to create a learning environment that incorporates the previously mentioned theories and encourages meaningful, deep learning. Teachers can do this by using various strategies, such as the station rotation model for content area instruction and scaffolding techniques. Additionally, read-alouds, modeling, and differentiated instruction can be used to ensure that students’ literacy skills improve.
