Proposal/Annotated Bibliography

Education is the foundation in which we must get behind and is a pillar in which this country is built upon. I picked this topic because I think this will be my future form of employment. I have experience in this profession because I was a Para-Professional for almost 3 year and during that time I notice that the teachers had to adjust to fit the classroom. I have first hand knowledge of this because I had an I.E.P. since I was in the third grade until I graduated from high school. So, I know the adjustments that the teachers made for me to succeed in school. The proposal is on education and how teachers teach students of different cultures and disabilities. The sources will help people understand what the teachers and the students go through in order to work together to achieve something great and learn more about each other.

One of the ways, I see that teachers who don’t adjust to the student could influence the number of students dropping out of school. I feel this can be attributed to the school and the teacher not taking the time to understand the students home life or just simply talking with the parents to see what can be done to get the student on track. I know resources are stretched thin in some communities but if you want to get the drop out rate reduced teachers and administrators must find a way to get through to the students. For the teachers who care, they use their own money for resources in the classroom or send out a letter to the parents letting them know what is needed in the classroom.

Education is however affected by several factors, one of them being diversity in the classroom, parent teacher communication and money for more professional development for teachers. Following the research, I will argue that this diversity and non-adjustment on the teacher’s part, causes poor academic performance and you lost the student. I feel if I told people my story on how my parents, teachers and administrators work together and got me all the available resources. This topic matter to others because this could be your child or a student in your class and we must figure out a way to help them. My research will make me a better teacher because I will notice when a student is struggling, and I will know how best to communicate with the student and the parents. The sources I have found, would make for a great professional development for teacher in area where it less diverse. I say this because teachers could learn different techniques to fit each student and sometimes a combination of things can be used to get the student on track. Example being with homework, instead of having the student do the whole assignment only give them the odd numbers one day and even the next. Also, the teacher could do a small tutoring session with those students has a daily or weekly check-in with them.

The book, however, states that a study done on both the hybrid and online methods of learning showed that learning environment does not affect the success of students. The research also examined how the characteristics of students affect their academic success.

This article was written by Sophie Quinton and published on the eleventh of November 2013. The author discusses the importance of linking up school and home. This need being brought about by the increasing diversity in the student population in public schools. The article talks about how teachers should work on building bridges between students’ current knowledge and what they are intended to learn. She, however, finds this a task since embracing the cultural backgrounds of students has been ignored due to demographic diversities. These diversities make it likely that the experiences of the teachers do not match those of their students, hence the need to link up school and home. The source will be used to show you what’s missing and how to fix the void in the classroom when it comes to diveristy.
