Professional Development Extra Credit (2%)-Allegheny West (AW)

 

Objective

      Develop a plan of how to address the following challenges in Allegheny West (a neighborhood bordering Temple University)

o   A community that has seen limited economic development in over 50 years

o   A community with huge tracts of abandoned warehouses and industrial sites

o   A community with a high percentage of the population that are unemployed

o   A community with few local (in the neighborhood) job opportunities

o   A community with an aging demographic (more older people than younger people) who may not have the technical skills to advance in today’s highly technical society (basics like ability to create a LinkedIn profile, complete an online application, write a resume)

o   A community with young people who cannot afford college and have not developed tangible trade skills to obtain post high school employment, and don’t have many career options

o   A community that suffers from a high crime rate

Assignment

 

      Research & document the history of Allegheny West (it’s economic history; unique aspects of the area, architectural value, famous or infamous inhabitants, etc.)

      Document (with references) the challenges above and others that you see as potential barriers

      Document why AW has not seen the economic progress compared to other Philadelphia neighborhoods (Manyunk, Northern Liberties, Fishtown, etc.)

      Develop a plan of how you would create a non-profit organization to tackle the above challenges. What specific things would the non-profit due. How would it operate. How would Temple University participate in AW development (if at all), any other ideas of how SPECIFICALLY, the non-profit would help address the challenges above.  How would you measure it's success
