Role of Advanced Practice Registered Nurse

Advanced nurse practice registered nurses include clinical nurse specialists, nurse midwives, and nurse practitioners, as well as nurse anesthetists who play significant role in future of healthcare. Advanced nurse practice registered nurses are usually primary care providers and provide preventive healthcare services to individuals, family members, and society (Nursing Journal, 2020). Advanced nurse practice registered nurses treat and diagnose health problems, advice public on health problems, engage in continuous education, and manage chronic illnesses. In addition to initial nursing education and practice, licensing, they hold at least a Master’s degree in nursing. Nurse practitioners offer primary, acute, as well as specialty healthcare services through diagnosis and treatment of diseases and injuries. Certified nurse midwives offer primary, gynecological, as well as reproductive healthcare. Clinical nurse specialists diagnose, treat, and manage patients. In addition, they help in driving practice changes throughout healthcare organizations and promote use of evidence based practices to accomplish best patient outcomes. A certified registered nurse anesthetist offers a wide range of anesthesia as well as pain management services.

Currently, I am pursuing a Masters degree in advanced degree as a family nurse practitioner at South University, Tampa. The program aims at helping registered nurses further their nursing skills by preparing them for current healthcare as well as professional standards to treat and manage patients and their family members throughout their lifespan. The program puts much emphasis on positive health behaviors during a person’s lifespan and health promotion. Overall, the course arms registered nurses with skill set needed to provide the best healthcare possible to patients (SU, 2020).

Clinical Role of Family Nurse Practitioners

Family nurse practitioners always work with families for provision of preventive care and successful implementation of healthcare plans. According to the Nurse Journal (2020) family nurse practitioners care for patients of different age groups in care facilities including clinics and hospitals. They instruct clients to advance and live good throughout their life expectancy. Some specialized in specific fields such as diabetes, mental health services, internal medicine, primary care, and midwifery, as well as oncology

Family Nurse Practitioners and Patient Outcome

Emphasis on Health and Wellness

Family health practitioners play significant roles in advancing positive patient outcomes. They do so by emphasizing health and wellness. Instead of treating a lone disease or symptom, they proactively help patients develop and maintain healthier lifestyles for promotion of long term health. They coach patients on how to make informed decisions relating to disease prevention and fostering of general wellness (Eriksson, Lindblad, Möller & Gillsjö, 2018). Fereidouni et al. (2019) found that nurse practitioners offer health education across different conditions to enhance patient outcomes. Eriksson et al. (2018) found that, throughout assessment, advanced nurse practitioners developed a holistic understanding of patient wellness. They identify and discuss emotional, physical, and/or mental factors affecting a person’s health. Family nurse practitioners are especially well prepared on how to promote wellness during a person’s all developmental stages.

Emphasis on Long Term Care

Family nurse practitioners are well equipped to serve patients of different age groups. This implies that a family nurse practitioner can follow an individual through his or her developmental stages. Woo et al. (2017) indicate that advanced nurse practitioners always establish long term relationships with their patients, thereby supporting their health status. Through long term relationship, a family nurse practitioner can for a deep understanding of his or her patient’s unique health requirements. For instance, a family nurse practitioner may monitor an infant through high risk pregnancy. By doing so, he or she will play a significant role in monitoring the child’s development into teenage and adulthood. The same family nurse practitioner can treat all family members, which leads to an in depth understanding social dynamics, lifestyle, as well as biological issues common in a family. A family nurse practitioner tracking medical issues of a parent will have a context for the spouse’s and children’s health.

Promotion of Quality Healthcare

Family nurse practitioners are well positioned to impact limitations in healthcare, which may improve accessibility to quality healthcare. With increased shortage of primary care providers in the United States (Johnson et al., 2016), the demand for family nurse practitioners is high, particularly in rural areas. Family nurse practitioners provide different services in assessment, planning, and diagnosis, as well as evaluation. Nonetheless, scope of practice may vary based on the state they operate. States with reduced practice authority tend to limit some element of nurse practitioner practice and may need physician supervision. However, family nurse practitioners in full practice jurisdictions work independently and can have their own healthcare facilities. Currently, 23 states grant nurse practitioners full authorization to practice (Woo et al., 2017), allowing family nurse practitioners to operate without physician supervision.

I will like to interview Esmeralda an advanced practice registered nurse specializing in family medicine. She is a nurse practitioner who works of one of the office affiliate with Tampa General hospital located at Tampa, Florida. The interview is set up to take place on October 16, 2020.

· Can a family nurse practitioner work in emergency department?

· Can a family nurse practitioner certify and authorize disability benefits?

· Can a family nurse practitioner obtain informed consent for blood transfusion?

· Is it a must that a physician should countersign a family nurse practitioner’s patient chart?

· Can a family nurse practitioner dispense medication? And what laws must he or she be familiar with when performing this function?

· Is it illegal for a family nurse practitioner to practice if a physician supervisor is 50 miles away?

· How often should a family nurse practitioner update his or her standardized procedures?

· What are the requirements for a family nurse practitioner seeking to work in a long term healthcare setting?

· Can I consider myself a family nurse practitioner after completing my Master’s degree program?

· Can I administer medications to patients by using standardized procedure if I do not have a furnishing number?

· Can a registered family nurse practitioner supervise a medical assistant?

Advance Nursing Practice Concept

Based on my findings during the research, the main concepts of APRN are to provide a holistic approach and to be excellent in clinical practice. Apart from these concepts, there are others involved, for example, collaboration, coaching and mentoring, ethical decisions, consulting and research. They also involve in diseases prevention in order to avoid unnecessary clients Emergency Department visits and Hospital admission
