SPECIFIC INSTRUCTIONS FOR BUS 265
Write a five to eight page paper (1500-2300 words) comprised of the following sections. List each section in your paper. Use the case, your book, and research to complete these requirements.
1) Section One: Describe the situation at NAI. Specifically, write multiple paragraphs describing the ethical dilemma faced by employee Nina Nguyen
2) Section Two: Write multiple paragraphs relating the NAI case (see Figures 1thru 3)-. “The capitalist system and its implications”. Specifically, discuss the concept of the invisible hand and “market morality” which suggest markets can be self-regulating as compared to the sections on “market failures” and “regulation of the market” which instead suggests that markets must be regulated in some manner. The “market morality” approach is similar to Milton Friedman’s view that the firm should only be concerned with its shareholders. By contrast, Carroll’s view of multiple stakeholders is more in line with the perspective that favors market regulation. Please integrate the views of Friedman and Carroll into your paper. Try to take a position on which approach is more appropriate to the NAI situation. Can the conduct of NAI in this case be self- regulated by the invisible hand and “market morality” or is this a “market failure” situation requiring regulation by the government?
3) Section Three: Write multiple paragraphs relating the facts of the case to Responsibility and Rights. Specifically, discuss how the facts of the case could lead to legal responsibility on the part of NAI and employees like Nina Nguyen. Consider whether or not the concept of a corporation as a moral agent applies to this case and whether or not it appears that NAI is acting morally. Also, discuss what workplace rights Nina Nguyen should have in this case. Do the work expectations of her employer impinge upon those rights?
4) Section Four: Review the diagram describing the different levels of social responsibility (Fig.4).
Write multiple paragraphs discussing the concepts of Affective Commitment, Normative Commitment and Continuance Commitment and how each concept relates to the situation which Nina Nguyen is facing. Conclude by determining the extent to which Nina should be committed to NAI given the facts of the case.
5) Section Five: Write multiple paragraphs discussing the course of action you would recommend for Nina. Should she accept the new position? Does she have a duty to follow the rules of accounting that are more important than her duties to her employer? Does the fact that she is a single mother with an ill child impact your recommendation ? Should she report the problem to any external agency such as the Securities and Exchange Commission?
6) Section Six: The ethical dilemma faced by Nina could force her to choose between the option that is legally and morally correct (leaving NAI) and the option which will be best for her and her family. Employees who refuse to perform their duties because those duties are illegal are sometimes able to recover legal damages in whistleblower lawsuits. However, lawyers will tell you that such recoveries are less likely if the employee resigns. Instead, lawyers will recommend that the employee elevate the issue within their employer which will likely lead to them being fired. Being fired is basically a requirement to recover legal damages in a whistleblower suit. This presents a challenge for employees like Nina. She cannot recover damages if she resigns but she risks criminal prosecution and possible loss of her CPA license if she continues to help NAI violate accounting rules. How could Nina possibly continue as an NAI employee in the near term without continuing to participate in the on-going accounting fraud? Here’s a clue- we learned about the Family and Medical Leave Act during one of the discussion assignments. Explain how the FMLA could be employed by Nina so that she can remain an employee in the near term without having to participate in the firm’s on-going accounting fraud.

Quality Sources: Use the NOVA or VCCS College online library for your sources. In general, Google searches are not considered quality sources/references (e.g., no Wikipedia, Ask.com, etc).
General Rule for In-text Citations-: one for each paragraph
Be sure to use the MS Word REFERENCE feature for capturing your sources. This feature allows you to insert citations and produce a reference list (bibliography).
