Project 4: Hero’s Journey Lensing Assignment
1. Review Joseph Campbell’s steps for the Hero’s Journey as discussed in this class:
Part 1: The Departure
A. An unusual birth/early childhood
B. Call to adventure
C. Crossing the threshold
Part 2: Initiation
A. Challenges/trials
B. Helper/mentor
C. Special weapon
D. Abyss/temptation
E. Transformation
Part 3: The Return
A. Return Home

2. Watch a film or film series that shows a character progressing through these steps to become a hero. There are no restrictions on the film. Anything goes. You will submit a proposal with your chosen film that must be approved before you write your essay. DO NOT USE any film from the Hunger Games series.
3. Write an essay where you explain how the character experiences each step in the film. Discuss the film assuming the reader has not seen the film. You will have to summarize certain plot details so that your reader can have an understanding of how the character experiences each step.

Double-spaced
1” margins
MLA heading in upper, left-hand corner
Title centered above beginning of essay
No page minimum/maximum
NOTE: Capitalize and Bold the steps within your essay

Suggested Organization:
I. Introduction
A. This paragraph introduces the film and includes a brief synopsis of the premise of the film
B. This paragraph should also introduce the character who will be on the journey
C. This paragraph may include information about Joseph Campbell and an explanation of what the Hero’s Journey is (if your introduction is too long, this information can be included in the first body paragraph)
II. Body paragraphs
A. You body paragraphs will include all of the steps of the Hero’s Journey as they relate to the character in your film
B. You can decide if you want to give one paragraph to each step or combine steps in each paragraph
C. Remember to Bold and Capitalize the title of each step
III. Conclusion
A. This should explain how understanding the Hero’s Journey concept can relate to our own lives
