The Different Cultures Across the Globe and Their Traditions

Introduction

In this massive globe there are a lot of different cultures from the well-known cultures of the West, to the small unfamiliar cultures of a small tribe in Africa. Each corner of this earth has its unique traditions, languages, and the ways of art. Every place has a community that is unique in its way of dressing, beliefs, and holidays. In Michigan State University there is a huge number of diversity in the students. There are people from South-East Asia, Europeans, Africans, and like me, Middle-Easterans who study side by side together with the spartans’ will. Being together although our differences is great for us as a community. We all can  learn from each other. The purpose of this essay is to demonstrate how students from different cultural backgrounds use different writing techniques to describe and analyze their cultural artifacts.

This essay will discuss three of my peers’ essays. It will include Tugs-Ochir

Sodbaatar’s essay, Mohammed Alshakhs’s essay and Khalid Dunor’s essay. This essay is divided into four sections. First, I will provide a summary of each one of my peers’ essays. Second, I will discuss the strengths and weaknesses of their essays. Third, I will write about what I have learned from their essays and their writing strategies. Finally, I will conclude this essay by writing a short and summarized conclusion.

Summaries of My Peers’ Essays

The title of Khalid’s essay is: “How People and Culture of the Gambia Is Changing Through Diffusion” (Dunor 1). He starts his essay talking about Gambia and its cultures and traditions. After that he gives the thesis which is: “The purpose of this project is to demonstrate what Gambian culture is like, and how the concept of Gambia people and culture is changing over time.” (Dunor 1). Later on, he gives background information about Gambia and its cultures. After that he talks about the History of the topic, and gives nice information about the country. Further he speaks about the present Gambia and how the people and country changed. He explains everything nicely with a lot of information. In the end he concludes the essay with a summary about the whole essay.

Tugs-Ochir does not include any title for his second project. He starts his essay with an introduction talking about how each country has its unique culture and traditions. Later on, he explains how he is going to talk about how the Mongolian people are celebrating “Naadam”. After that he gives the thesis which is: “The purpose of this project is to demonstrate what this festival is, and how the meaning of these days are shifting over time.” (Sodbaatar 1). After all that he gives background information about “Naadam” and gives some information about this holiday. Afterwards, he speaks about the time and money spent on participating and gives examples of the prizes that could be awarded to the participants. Later on, he writes a paragraph on the history of this amazing holiday and how it started. Afterwards, he speaks about the issues and problems with the “Naadam”. Furthermore, he explains one of the issues which is the unsafety of the food. Also, he tackles another issue which is the overdrinking of alcohol. Another issue that he talks about, is that sometimes some bribing happens in the background. After that, he simply explains the political impacts on “Naadam”. Afterwards, he presents a possible solution to some of the problems. He beautifully ends the whole essay with a summary around the topic.

The title of Mohammed’s essay is: “Why Different Parts of Saudi Arabia have Different Cultural Conventions'' (Alshakhs 1). He starts his essay talking about how the Saudi culture is influenced by the islamic and general Arab traditions. After that he gives the thesis which is: “The purpose of this project is how Sasudi Arabia is like different culture conventions.” (Alshakhs 1) Afterwards, he gives background information talking about how Saudi Arabia has been facing complex cultural differences in different parts. Later on, he speaks about the history of different cultural conventions in Saudi Arabia, and he explains how Saudi Arabia is bulit on islam. After all that, he speaks about the present sites of different cultural conventions. Furthermore, he explains the current problems with different cultural conventions in Saudi Arabia. Later Mohammed gives a possible solution to some of the problems. Afterwards he ends the essay with a conclusion.

Analysis of My Peers’ Essays and Some of Their Weaknesses and Strengths

Khalid's essay was really strong and really stuck to the content of the topic. One of his strengths is the consistency with the main idea of the topic. Also he gave a lot of detailed information about Gambia and its culture, for example he stated that: “The Gambia is a multiparty republic. Under the constitution that was ratified 1996 and went into effect in 1997, the president, who is the head of state and government, is elected by universal suffrage to a five-year term” (Dunor 3). One of the weaknesses that I noticed about this strong essay is that he didn't present a solution to his problem. The problem as Khalid stated: “Village elders and storytellers were finding fewer young people interested and having time to listen to them” (Dunor 5). I wish Khalid presented a possible solution to this problem.

Tugs-Ochir came in real strong with his essay, it was beautifully written with a lot of nice ideas about “Naadam”. He spoke about its history, presented pictures, and also spoke about some of the problems that come with this holiday. The statement from Tugs-Ochir: “There are several problems that appeared in my sight and how to solve those conflicts without interfering people’s movements.” (Sodbaatar 5) clearly list the issues with Naadam. One of Tugs-Ochir weaknesses is that he didn't include a title to this amazing essay. I also liked how he clearly stated a potential solution to the problem, where he stated: “What I have in my mind is, we need to switch the understanding about Naadam, to become a very traditional and honest festival where every person is on a similar level of living without any trouble.” (Sodbaatar 9)

Mohammed has a decently written assignment, he explains how Saudi Arabia has different cultural conventions. It is written in a simple understandable manner, which makes the essay really easy to read. One of the weaknesses I think is that he didn't really give a lot of examples in his essay. Also I wish if he concentrated on the main idea and explained more on how Islam and Arabic culture infulenced Saudi Arabia. Another point is that he didn’t stay with the thesis and the main purpose of the essay.

What I Gained From My Peers’ Essays

I learned that using images to support your main idea in an essay is a really good way to make the essay more exciting, I experienced that from Tugs-Ochir. Adding images to your essay gives the essay a more professional look. I also learned a lot about the “Naadam” holiday in Mongolia and the culture around it. With Khalid’s essay, I learned that showing detail about information you want to implement in your essay makes the essay a lot more informative about the topic you are writing about. Also, knowing more about Gambian culture was really interesting. In Mohammed’s essay I learned that simple writing makes it a lot easier for the reader to understand a certain topic without a lot of hardships.

Conclusion

By reviewing my peers' essays I have learned a lot from them. Not only the informative essays about different cultures that they have presented in a really nice way, but also the different writing styles that have been demonstrated by my peers. Also, by reading my peers essays I have been shown a lot of different perspectives in different cultures about a lot of things in life. By being a Spartan it is important to respect and value other cultures, and by reviewing my peers essays I would say that I value other cultures a lot more than before.
