Project  2:  Sensitivity  Exercise  (4  points)     This  exercise  is  designed  to  get  you  to  think  about  how  you  would  manage  a  person  with  a  very  difficult   personal  situation.  You  will  soon  be  managing  real  people  with  real  challenges.  Being  a  manager  is   about  more  than  just  getting  work  accomplished.  You  have  to  get  work  accomplished  through  other   people.  Connecting  with  those  people  on  a  genuine  level  is  critical  to  your  success.  The  housekeeping   department  typically  has  the  largest  number  of  staff,  receiving  pay  at  the  lower  end  of  the  pay  scale.  In   this  department  you  will  have  employees  whose  personal  lives  involve  many  difficult  situations.  Are   you  ready  to  handle  these  situations  gracefully?  Managers  who  find  ways  to  be  thoughtful  of  these   situations  have  a  better  chance  of  developing  employee  loyalty  and  lower  turnover.     The  task.  Spend  a  day  imagining  you  were  a  person  with  a  specific  ailment  or  difficult  situation.  (One   has  been  assigned  to  you  (See  the  list  on  Blackboard).      1.  Find  your  name  and  associated  situation  on  the  “Sensitivity  Assignment”  list.      2.  Find  two  articles  (one  peer  reviewed,  and  a  second  one  of  your  choice)  that  describe  realities  of  the   situation.

3.  Then  spend  the  day  looking  at  the  world  through  the  eyes  of  the  person  you  are  describing.     4.  You  will  turn  in  the  PDF  of  the  two  articles,  and  a  list  of  ten  bulleted  observations  along  with  a   lessons  learned  paragraph,  of  what  it  was  like  to  spend  a  day  in  the  person's  shoes.

3  ITEMS  YOU  MUST  TURN  IN  TO  RECEIVE  FULL  CREDIT:  On  word  document  with  10  bullets  and  a   paragraph  of  your  overall  lesson  learned,  and  2  articles  in  PDF  format,  attached  to  this  assignment.

P.S.  If  the  issue  you  were  randomly  assigned  is  too  close  to  your  own  reality,  or  otherwise  personally   painful,  you  should  e-‐mail  me  to  garciala@fiu.edu,  and  I  will  assign  you  another  issue.  If  you  have   already  contacted  me  for  an  assignment,  that  assignment  takes  precedent  over  the  one  posted  on  the   list.

FOR  ANOTHER  RACE:  Pick  a  race  other  than  your  own,  and  try  to  imagine  how  walking  in  someone   else’s  shoes  might  impact  each  activity  of  your  daily  life.  Please  use  the  established  categories  for  race.

FOR  OPPOSITE  SEX:  Students  often  decide  to  take  a  funny  or  humorous  approach  with  these.  This  is  the   only  category  where  this  approach  is  acceptable.  All  students  in  all  other  categories  should  attempt  to   put  themselves  in  the  shoes  of  the  other  person.
