Essay: Respond to an opinion editorial and try to persuade the audience of that publication to your point of view, using Ethos, Pathos, and Logos. You can find an opinion editorial that you agree with, and you can extend the ideas in the publication, or you can find one you disagree with (in part or in whole), and counter points made in the opinion editorial.

Please use at least one outside source, besides the opinion editorial you are responding to, to support your ideas. It does not have to be a scholarly article. It can come from a general internet search.

1. Identify an opinion editorial to respond to.

2. Conduct research in that subject area to find sources that will lend credibility to your essay

3. Identify who the audience is

4. Carefully consider your rhetorical situation

5. Submit a writing proposal

A successful essay will:

1. Give a brief overview of the topic/debate and the opinion editorial being responded to.

2. Create a specific argument that is logically supported

3. Follow conventions of structure to guide the reader from one idea to the next

4. Follow conventions of grammar, mechanics, and diction

5. Show conscious decisions to appeal to ethos, pathos and logos in your attempt to persuade your audience.

6. Show conscious decisions to utilize rhetorical devices in your attempt to persuade your audience.

7. Be appropriate at all times for its given rhetorical situation. Never stop thinking about the rhetorical situation as you make every rhetorical decision.

Grading Criteria:

I will use a holistic scoring rubric to evaluate your paper that takes into account your mastery of such facets of writing as organization, development, grammar, mechanics, and usage. This paper will evaluated on its ability to create rhetorical appeals.
