BEHS 103 Technology in Contemporary Society Week 6 – Progress Report Topic: Transportation and its Impact on Society

Since the industrial revolution mankind has made a great progress in many ways

including transportation. Although the progress has brought about many benefits, like being able

to move from point A to point B faster and not just locally by automobiles, but also on a global

level by aviation and railroad, the benefits came at a grate expense. The greatest price is

manifesting in the scientifically proven climate change and its consequences deriving from

carbon emissions, greenhouse gasses, and air pollution.

In this slideshow we’ll address those consequences by referring to case studies, scholarly

articles, and analysis that shed light on the problem and urges the need for alternative energy

sources. First, we’ll discuss an article published by engineers from University of Zilina, Faculty

of Securing Engineering, in Slovakia by Zdenka Urbancova and Maria Luskova, PhD regarding

railway transportation and its facilities and how they influence the society. Specifically, the

implications of railway operations and power failure that directly impact human population,

infrastructure, environmental issues, and its importance to societies as a whole (Urbancova,

Luskova, 2019). These issues were discussed during an International Multidisciplinary Scientific

Conference on Social Sciences and Arts SGEM.

Second is a collaborative scholarly article that derives from Journal of Cleaner

Production, and is titled Public transportation adaptation requires a paradigm shift in urban

development structure, and cowritten by Tolga Ercan and Omer Tatari from Department of Civil,

Environmental, and Construction Engineering, University of Central Florida, USA, Nuri Onat

from Department of Industrial Engineering, Istanbul Sehir University, Turkey, and Jean-Denis

Mathias from Irstea, UR LISC, Centre de Clemont-Rerand, Aubeire, France. This cross-

referenced article discusses the rise of auto industry in the Unites States due to urban

development and how it impacts public transportation, lack of research data in its regard, and the

possibility to need to implement policies that would increase the use of public transportation in

efforts to limit pollution due to heavy use of vehicles in the US (Ercan, Onat, Tatari, Mathias,

2017).

Third cross referenced article from Science of the Total Environment takes an innovative

approach to reduce air pollutants, greenhouse gases and heat emission driving from means of

transportation. It proposes to launch a testing phase in urban city of San Paulo, Brazil by

replacing internal combustion methods of transportation to light-duty vehicles, trucks, and buses

with electric engines (Ribeiro, Umezaki, Chiquetto, Santos, Machado, Miranda, Almeida,

Mouette, Leichsenring, Ueno, 2021). This could be the beginning to revolutionizing the

transportation industry on national levels, as we know electric vehicles already exist and are well

in use, however, the trick is to find a way to charge the vehicles with an alternative power source,

such as solar panels.

The fourth case study also takes an innovative approach and claims that academic

institutions should take the responsibility to advocate sustainable strategies as its purpose is to

educate, inspire, and produce innovative thinkers. The case study was implemented on Ege

University campus in 2016 that has become eco-friendly to demonstrate that if all campuses

follow the lead it could result with significant reduction of carbon footprint and pollution

emissions Daglioglu (2021).

Finally, the fifth article addresses the very hot topic of sustainability and the carbon footprint of

oil products pipeline transportation, written by several experts from China, Sweeden, and Japan.

It does a deeper dive regarding climate change due to carbon footprint from oil production

pipeline transportation and presents a detailed Life Cycle Assessment model to analyze carbon

emissions and how it affects soil Huang, Liao, Yan, Liang, Zhang, 2021).

Conclusively, there is scientific evidence that presents dire consequences from the use

and operations of transportation industry and there is dire need to rethink and rebuilt the industry

to stop the climate change and reduce air pollution and greenhouse gas emissions.
