Professional Clinical Reasoning Case Scenario:
Consulting to a Largely Volunteer Organization
Janelle is an occupational therapy consultant who is being asked to provide consultation services to an organization offering social and recreational activities for adults with intellectual disabilities. This organization is staffed largely by a group of dedicated volunteers, many of whom have family members with intellectual disabilities. As she is completing the evaluation phase of the process, she observes that the program of activities is not specifically designed to meet the performance skills and client factors of the individual participants. Janelle proposes training and education for the volunteers to increase their skills in activity analysis and adaptation through her consultation services.
Possible Consequences
Integrating the volunteers’ enhanced skills and altered activities into the daily routine of the organization may have multiple consequences.
· Volunteer beliefs: The volunteers may need to change their beliefs and attitudes about the abilities and needs of individuals with intellectual disabilities.
· Pragmatics of change: The volunteers and program director may need to work together differently to change the schedule and structure of daily activities.
· Authority lines: There may be an impact on the line of authority for decisions regarding needed resources and supplies and the implementation of the activity program.
Impact on Evaluation Phase
During the evaluation phase, gathering information through interviews and observations about the organization’s culture and authority structure provides the consultant with information about whether the proposed services and inherent changes might be met with resistance or acceptance.
Instructions:
