Problem Identification & SMART Goal Setting

What’s the problem that you want to solve within your school/district/childcare center/etc.?

The problem is that 50% of the students do not know their letters/Letter sounds, blending, adding/deleting phonemes. Students need to know what letter comes before, next, and after. Phonological awareness skills are compound words, blending, adding/deleting phonemes.

In order to create a solution for this problem, let’s write a goal using the SMART attributes.

S

What do you want to achieve? Be precise.

Specific

My goal is to focus on learning how to increase the alphabet recognition of the lowest students. I would like to learn effective strategies that will help the students utilize skills to be able to help them with letter recognition and phonological awareness. Some of the skills are: what letter comes before, next, and after. Phonological awareness skills are compound words, blending, adding/deleting phonemes.

M

How will you know when the goal has been reached? What are the metrics and milestones that need to be hit along the way?

Measurable

Small/whole group sessions with students, more take home activities that puts emphasis on letter recognition/blending, compound words, and letter sounds. Alphabet flash cards, short videos on letter sounds, blending. Practice worksheets with letters.

A

What do you want to achieve? Be precise.

Achievable

At least 50% of the identified student group will be at 75% on the upper/lowercase letters and phonological awareness.

R

Why is this goal worthwhile? Does it support the wider team and your other responsibilities?

Relevant

The goal is worthwhile because the Pre-K students will be ready for kindergarten. Letter sounds/Letter recognition are important skills that will help them learn to read.

T

When do you want to achieve this goal? Write down a target date.

Time-bound

Target Date 01/25/2022

Now rewrite your initial goal as a concise, defined SMART goal.

Tracking your goal progress

What are the action steps you would need to take to achieve this goal? Order these by priority or by their due date.

· Action: Work with students in small groups at least 30 min a day

· Action: Send home activities home to practice every night

· Action: Have a weekly quiz to track the student’s progress.

Are you on track to achieve this goal? While you haven’t yet begun to implement the goal and the action steps, what obstacles do you anticipate may come up and what support would you need to overcome them?

· Obstacle: Students not coming to school, home activities not being enforced at home, no support from parents.

· Support: Meet weekly with parents, have a parent night

· Obstacle: no support from parents.

· Support: encourage parents, so that they can encourage their children, encourage parents to work with their children on the home activities, see if any parents need help themselves that will make it easier for them to support their children. (may need food, or internet, parenting classes, give them resources to help them get back in school or find a job)
