1-2 Assignment: Research Question

1. Select a category in the Project Resource Document.

a. I selected Physical and Mental Health

2. Select one of the articles.

a. MLA citation: Denis. Matthew. “Study: The Evidence Overwhelmingly Says 4-Day Work Weeks Are Good for Everyone.” The Manual, 2 Oct. 2022, www.themanual.com/culture/why-4-day-work-weeks-are-good-for-everyone/. Accessed 14 Feb. 2023.

3. Identify a debatable topic related to your chosen source.

a. One debatable topic: The implementation of a 4-day work week may inadvertently impact employees' mental health, particularly concerning issues of equity and inequality.

b. While the article may acknowledge the potential benefits for employees in terms of work-life balance, job satisfaction, and potentially improved mental health, it may not fully delve into the potential exacerbation of inequalities. This is particularly relevant for lower-income workers or those in precarious employment situations, who may lack the same bargaining power to negotiate shorter work weeks or may experience financial strain due to loss of income. Such financial challenges can significantly impact one's mental health, adding another layer of complexity to the discussion.

4. Write a research question about your topic.

a. Question: How do 4-day work weeks impact lower-income employees, particularly in terms of their access to reduced work hours, job stability, income levels, and overall well-being, and what strategies can be implemented to ensure that the benefits of shorter work weeks are equitably distributed among all socioeconomic groups?

b. Clarify: My research question explores the challenges of equity and equality for lower-income employees and the potential inadvertent impacts on their mental well-being.

c. Analysis of the effects: My research question is comprehensive and addresses several important aspects related to the impact of 4 day-work weeks on lower-income employees and to identify strategies to ensure the benefits of this change are distributed fairly among all socioeconomic groups.

d. Complex discussion: This research question prompts a complex discussion that touches upon various dimensions of socioeconomic inequality, workplace dynamics, and policy implications.

5. State the purpose of your research.

a. The purpose of my research question on the 4-day work week is to explore its implications within the context of my socioeconomic status as a middle-income individual. In recent years, especially following the COVID-19 pandemic, there has been a notable surge in inflation across various aspects of daily life. This inflationary trend has had a significant impact on numerous households, particularly those belonging to the middle and lower socioeconomic classes. Finances can be a significant source of stress for many individuals, and a 4-day work week can cause more stress for lower-income individuals.

b. Researching the benefits and challenges of implementing a 4-day work week will provide me with a deeper understanding of the complexities associated with this alternative work schedule. Despite the extensive list of benefits associated with a shorter work week, there are still challenges to consider. Additionally, exploring various strategies to promote equality for all employees, regardless of their socioeconomic status, is crucial in ensuring fair and inclusive workplace practices.
