Feminist concepts, theories and frameworks have a life outside of academic debate. Within the field of WGS, theory is validated not by distancing itself from the everyday world of gendered existence, but by the extent to which theory resonates in the everyday. In other words, feminist theory has value and is valued to the extent that it explains or deciphers women’s lives. To that end, this assignment asks you to analyze a recent event or issue that has some significance to women by applying insights from a theory or concept introduced in the set of assigned readings that correspond with the date of your presentation to that event. In other words, how does feminist theory help us better understand issues that affect women’s lives?

Presentations Must Include These Three Components:

Component 1: Feminist Concept or Theory Name and define/explain the theory or concept; the definition and/or explanation must include one or more quotations from one or more of the assigned readings that correspond with the date of your presentation; cite the sources you use

Component 2: Event or Issue Introduce the event or issue; be sure to include relevant background information (don’t assume the class knows about the event or issue); here, you should link to or include an outside source (a video, news article, blog, or other reliable source); the event or issue may be of local, national or global significance so long as it is clearly an issue or event that impacts women’s lives

Component 3: Discussion & Analysis Here, your group must develop an interpretation (an analysis) of the event or issue that makes use of the theory or concept introduced in your presentation (e.g., the first component); this portion of the presentation requires you to apply what you’ve learned in order to develop a new explanation, identify new connections or drawn new conclusions about the event or issue; in other words, your discussion must include an original analysis that demonstrates the relevance and applicability of feminist theory and concepts to the everyday lives and experiences of women

The theory or concept and its definition/explanation must be drawn from one more of the readings that correspond with the date of your presentation

✴ The definition or explanation of the theory or concept must include a direct quote from one or more readings; cite your source(s)

✴ This assignment in no way asks for a summary; as such, DO NOT summarize ANY of the assigned readings; doing so will absolutely have a negative impact on the grade your group receives; it may also result in me cutting off your presentation before you’ve finished

✴ Presentations should be at least 15 minutes, but not more than 20 minutes; participation by all group members is required
