Oral Presentation (Signature Assignment: 25%): Students will prepare oral presentations (approximately 10 minutes) centered on sustainability issues of students’ own community (e.g., Jersey City, Newark, Hudson County). Students will select a topic for their presentations (see examples). Students will collect scientific data and information related to sustainable management of urban communities.

Examples: urban heat island, energy conservation, flood and green infrastructure, urban waste management and recycling, transportation and energy efficiency, urban ecosystem, sustainable urbanization & development, sustainable city parks.

The presentation needs to cite a minimum of 5 references including peer-reviewed journal articles, news articles and credible websites from governmental, non-governmental or non-profit organizations and provide practical solutions to the sustainability issues through civic engagement.

The signature assignment will help students understand the process of city planning and development and will actively engage them in sustainability issues and problems of their community, which will fulfill the civic engagement learning outcome as well as oral communication learning outcome.

Your presentation should be ready by Nov. 30, Wednesday.

Structure of your oral presentation

2. Introduction slides: Provide background information and state the purpose for your research.

3.Results slides: Provide the major findings of your research.

4.Discussion slides: Provide your plan for civic actions or share your experience of civic engagement.

5.Conclusion slides: Provide the summary of the research and your final comment.

6.References slides: at least 5 references
