Assignment 4 (Sample)
1One of my greatest vacations was spent in Washington, DC. 2The first thing I did on my
arrival was to visit some of the Smithsonian Institution’s museums. 3These museums were
gigantic, with elaborate marble floors and columns that reached dizzying heights I spent three
days visiting these museums. 4Many tourists come to see the treasures of the exposition. 5Museum
visits free to public. 6Another goal of my visit it was to see some impressive memorials. 7The
Lincoln Memorial was immense. 8I spent almost half an hour enjoying its view, taking photos and
read two of Lincoln’s most famous speeches that are imprinted on the walls of the Lincoln
Memorial. 9Then, I decided to walk down the National Mall to the Washington Monument. 10I
was moved by the size and simplicity of the tall, rectangular stone tower dedicated to the memory
of the first president of the United States. 11My final day in Washington was spent just walking
around. 12Because it was April, I even got to see the famous cherry blossoms in bloom.
13Although April is a spring month. 14Some types of trees do not bloom until late summer.
15Clearly, Washington, DC has a lot to offer your visitors!

Sample explanations and corrections:
Sentence 13 is a fragment. It is a dependent clause which cannot be used on its own.
It can be fixed by joining two sentences: Although April is a spring month, some types of
trees do not bloom until late summer.
Sentence 3 is a run-on because it contains two independent clauses that are written
with no punctuation. It can be fixed by separating the two ideas: These museums were
gigantic, with elaborate marble floors and columns that reached dizzying heights. I spent
three days visiting these museums.
Sentence 8 lacks parallelism. Each item in the list should follow the same grammatical
pattern: I spent almost half an hour enjoying its view, taking photos and reading two of
Lincoln’s most famous speeches that are imprinted on the walls of the Lincoln Memorial.
