Modern retail has been undergoing a 50-year transition from the classic shopkeeper customer (one-on-one) relationship to the impersonal mindset that shaped so much of the modern mass-retailing era. Today, a number of retailers are working to go back to one-on-one relationships, but are quickly realizing that a people-based model struggles to be scalable beyond a certain point.
