UN Global Environmental Threats Denise Childs 8/22/2019 1 Solutions to Global Issues 2019 1 Big Four Global Environmental Threats Climate Change 2 Poor health of entire populations Inappropriate uses of technology Civil war 2019 Regardless of all the good in the world, and all the progress being made in global issues, there is still much more to be done. Given the overwhelming disasters that nations, including the U.S., have been or still are going through, it is important to be aware of the most pressing global issues ( Najam, Runnalls & Halle, 2016). 3 On the top of the list of the four most critical threats o the global environment is climate change. It is evident that the effects of climate change are felt by every living creature on the planet. As the rate increases from 2.6 degrees to 4.8 degrees, human beings and other living beings must prepare to counter the adverse consequences accompanying the change. 4 Second on the list is poor health of entire population. Currently, it is very easy to point at sources of poor health for the people and animals in the world. Water pollution, air pollution, land pollution among others are increasingly growing. Large population size is not accessing clean water, air and land. Due to globalization and industrialization, the world is becoming filthy and dirty daily threatening the health of the people and animals (Najam, Runnalls & Halle, 2016). Third on the list is inappropriate use of technology which has increased the rate of insecurity and threatened cybersecurity. Cyberattacks and data frauds are increasing causing loss of data and money for most critical agencies in the globe. This also puts the lives of the entire population at risk. Number four of the critical concerns to the global environment is civil war accelerated by terrorism, violence and harassment. Such can be social, financial, political or even sexual. All affect the globe in one way or another. 2 Climate Change Bodanksy (2016) writes that history of climate change dates back to Ancient Greece People would not believe their inappropriate behavior to the environment would change global climate In 1940-1970, people experience Earth Cooling which was a result of pollutants emitted into the atmosphere that blocked the sunrays away from the planet. In 1988, real global warming kicked off, and since then, it has been increasing at a rising rate. Currently, the impact of greenhouse gases is felt across the globe by humans and animals. It is now expected to increase from 2.6 degrees to 4.8 degrees by 2100. 2019 5 Dating back to the ancient Greeks, many people had proposed that humans could change temperatures and influence rainfall by chopping down trees, plowing fields or irrigating a desert. The idea that humans could somehow alter climate on a global scale would seem far-fetched for centuries. In the 1890s, however, the concept of warming the planet was remote and even welcomed. People from the cold regions of the planet rejoiced over the concern notwithstanding the subsequent consequences (Bodansky, 2001). 6 The early 1980s would mark a sharp increase in global temperatures. Many experts point to 1988 as a critical turning point when watershed events placed global warming in the spotlight (Bodansky, 2001). 3 7 Countries affected by Climate Change 3 The regions that are most affected by climate change in the world are: The Great Barrier Reef, Australia Glacier National Park, Montana The Amazon Forest, South America The Rhône Valley, France Key West, Florida 2019 8 Key West is known for its pastel-colored buildings, ideal snorkeling conditions, and a relaxed atmosphere. But even before Hurricane Irma wreaked havoc last year, the southernmost city in the U.S. was facing environmental challenges: 8 The Army Corps of Engineers estimates that the sea level in the Florida Keys will rise 15 inches over the next 30-odd years. Continual flooding has pushed Key West to undergo a massive, $1 million. In effort to elevate roads before they become a permanent underwater attraction (Moss & Morton, 2018). 8 Besides, the Rhône Valley, France is among the most vaunted winemaking regions in the world. It covers a passageway of more than 120 miles in length, and visitors could spend a full week driving from one tasting to the next, admiring the sprawling vineyards surrounded by mountainous backdrops. But as global temperatures rise, making the environment inhospitable for grapevines, many experts predict production will shrivel (we're talking an 85 percent decrease) and winemakers will be forced to relocate to cooler locales in Northern Europe (Moss & Morton, 2018). The Amazon forest is the largest forest on earth covering about 40% of South America. 4 Yet despite the Amazon's size, climate change has made it a fragile habitat. Extreme droughts have left tree species throughout the tropical jungle parched, as a result, they're vulnerable to large-scale dieback and more susceptible to forest fires. Studies show that the Amazon's trees will start to die if the area's dry season lasts longer than 5-7 months—right now, the dry season clocks in at just a few weeks shy of that threshold (Moss & Morton, 2018). 4 Furthermore, spread over a million acres in Montana on the U.S.-Canada border, Glacier National Park attracted some 3.3 million visitors in 2017. But as global temperatures rise, this pristine ecosystem, home to hundreds of species of animals and thousands of plants, is rapidly losing one of its main attractions: the very glaciers that give it its name. 9 Research indicates that a warming climate has significantly reduced the size of 39 different glaciers in the park —the worst of which have seen reductions up to 85 percent. 8 Among other countries and regions affected by climate change, the Great Barrier Reef, located off the northeast coast of Australia, is the largest coral reef system in the world. According to research, But rising ocean temperatures have caused coral bleaching in vast portions —a condition in which the coral turns white and is prone to mass die-offs (Moss & Morton, 2018). 4 10 Impact of Climate Change on World Population Climate change causes millions of death in the world every year. Increased heat waves Droughts and Famine Floods 2019 While the WHO estimates that climate change will contribute to about 250,000 additional deaths each year between 2030 and 2050, many see that as a considerable underestimate. Emerging evidence suggests the impact of climate change on health and society will be more serious and more rapid than we used to think. (Najam, Runnalls & Halle, 2016) Climate change could affect our society through impacts on a number of different social, cultural, and natural resources. For example, climate change could affect human health, infrastructure, and transportation systems, as well as energy, food, and water supplies. Besides, lack of food and water due to the drought period would lead to millions of deaths in the world. 11 Climate change will also likely affect tourism and recreational activities. A warming climate and changes in precipitation patterns will likely decrease the number of days when recreational snow activities such as skiing and snowmobiling can take place. In the Southwest and Mountain West, an increasing number of wildfires could affect hiking and recreation in parks. Beaches could suffer erosion due to sea level rise and storm surge. Changes in the migration patterns of fish and animals would affect fishing and hunting. Communities that support themselves through these recreational activities would feel economic impacts as tourism patterns begin to change. 5 Visual Presentations of Climate Change The graphic above helps to visualize how the different types of identified U.S. Billion-dollar disaster events have changed over time. For earlier years, the graphic shows events with less than $1 billion in damage at the time of the event, but after adjusting for Consumer Price Index (inflation), now exceed $1 billion in damages (Climate Impact on Society, 2019) 6 4 Poor health for the entire population Health is a global concern Poor health emanates from lack social and political Poor health and poverty are closely linked. On causes the other in most cases. Poor health continues to raise alarms in the globe affecting the social, economic and national development of countries. 12 Globally, the rate of deaths from non-communicable causes, such as heart disease, stroke, and injuries, is growing. At the same time, the number of deaths from infectious diseases, such as malaria, tuberculosis, and vaccine-preventable diseases, is decreasing. 13 In the 21st Century, health care systems across the world are focusing policy efforts on improving the quality of healthcare delivered to their population. In contrast, healthcare quality improvement in earlier time periods arose from a series of seemingly unrelated incidents and developments. 14 It is also important to mention that Poverty and poor health worldwide are inextricably linked. The causes of poor health for millions globally are rooted in political, social and economic injustices. 10 Poverty is both a cause and a consequence of poor health. 4 Poverty increases the chances of poor health. 15 Poor health, in turn, traps communities in poverty. 16 Infectious and neglected tropical diseases kill and weaken millions of the poorest and most vulnerable people each year (Najam, Runnalls,& Halle, 2016). 7 1 Countries most affected by Poo Health Countries most affected are developing countries which are poor and have poor healthcare systems. The countries include Republic of Sierra Leone (Has the poorest health care system in the world) Republic of the Union of Myanmar (The second poorest in the world) Central African Republic (Third poorest on the WHO healthcare ranking) Democratic Republic of Congo (fourth poorest on the WHO healthcare ranking) 17 Developing countries face huge challenges providing even basic universal healthcare to their citizens. Each year, more than eight million children die from preventable diseases in countries with the worst health care systems. 4 One of the countries is the Republic of Sierra Leone. Sierra Leone has the dubious distinction of being the worst country in providing healthcare to its citizens, with a score of 0.00 on the WHO health systems performance index. The country was devastated by civil war, but is now slowly rebuilding itself into a stable democratic country. During the war, medical facilities in the country were looted and destroyed. This, along with most people living in rural areas, means that very few people in Sierra Leone have access to health care coverage. 4 Pregnant women have the legal right to free health care but the country is unable to provide it. 1 There are only about 22 physicians for every million people, and about 60% of the rural population does not have adequate access to clean drinking water. Life expectancy at birth is about 54 years. About 42% of the population is under 15 years old. Malaria is a disease of huge concern to the country (Kingma, 2018). Deep rooted problems in its health care system have for long stunted development in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). 10 Its score of 0.171/1 makes it the fourth worst on the WHO ranking of countries’ health system performance. The country has been in almost perpetual conflict and it is majorly affected by Ebola outbreaks. 1 There is only one doctor for every 10,000 people in DRC, according to WHO. Average life expectancy is a shockingly low 48.7 years for the population of over 75 million. 43% of these are under 15 years old, making the median age of the country 17. Malnutrition is widespread. Less than 25% of the population has access to proper sanitation facilities and clean water, so water-borne diseases such as diarrhea and cholera are common. However, the greatest threat is form malaria (Matowe, Mori & Mawa, 2019). With a WHO health systems performance score of 0.156/1, the Central African Republic (CAR) is the third worst country where health care is concerned. 18 The political instability and general lawlessness, combined with poverty and poor infrastructure, have brought down the average life expectancy to just 49 years. 1 This situation has led to a rise in preventable diseases such as malaria among families still hiding from armed groups in the bush. Sanitation problems and lack of clean water are major sources of ill health in this country. Diarrhea is one of the major causes of death for children under 5 years old (Matowe, Mori & Mawa, 2019). 10 yanmar, previously known as Burma, is the only non-African nation on this list, with a score of 0.138/1 on the WHO health systems performance index. 1 This makes it the second worst country in the world in providing healthcare. 18 Myanmar’s spending on health care as a part of its GDP (0.5% to 3%) is among the lowest in the world, and it receives the least amount of international aid per capita. Even though the government purports free health care, the major part of healthcare expenses has to be paid out of pocket by the citizens. 1 Average life expectancy is 50 years, with a quarter of the population below 15 years. There are only 6 doctors for every million citizens. However, recent changes are improving the situation 8 1 Impact on World Population Causes death 14 Reduce economic productivity Increases Government expenditures Reduce living standards 4 Poverty and poor health had lead to malnutrition. Currently there are 795 million people who do not have enough to eat. Long-term success to ending world hunger starts with ending poverty. With fighting poverty through proper training for employment, education and the teaching of cooking and gardening skills, people who are suffering will be more likely to get jobs, earn enough money to buy food and even learn how to make their own food to save money. Poor health causes millions of death in the world. According to Banatvala et al. 16 (2019), HIV, diarrhea, tuberculosis and malaria, as well as communicable respiratory diseases such as pneumonia kill the most people. Diarrhea, pneumonia and malaria account for nearly half of all child deaths globally. 2 As a result, billions of dollars of economic activity are lost each year as a result of illness and death from HIV, TB and malaria. This can seriously reduce economic growth in countries that are already struggling. Malaria reduces economic growth by 1.3% in heavily affected countries, and costs around $12 billion in lost GDP across Africa. 14 TB costs around 7% of GDP in the worst affected countries. As the government expenditure is increase to treat and prevent the diseases, supply of necessities decrease in effect and hence it affects the living standards. 9 Visual Representation of Poor Health 7 From the graph, the probability of dying from diabetes, cancer, cardiovascular disease and chronic lung disease between ages 30 and 70 dropped four percentage points, to 18% in 2016 down from 22% in 2000. In 2015, an estimated 303,000 women died due to complications in pregnancy or childbirth: 99% of these deaths were in low- and middle-income countries. Lastly, Meeting cleaner air targets is also a struggle. More than half of the urban population was exposed to outdoor air pollution levels of at least 2.5 times above the safety standard set by the WHO, while estimates show nine out of 10 people worldwide breathe polluted air (Banatvala et al., 2019). 10 7 Inappropriate use of Technology Inappropriate use of technology dates back to a man named Bob Thomas who designed the first attack on a network. In 1970s and 1980s, threats to network and technology existed at superficial levels unlike in the present world. People use technology to enrich themselves at the expense of national security and safety of fellow people. 19 The history of cyber security began with a research project. A man named Bob Thomas realized that it was possible for a computer program to move across a network, leaving a small trail wherever it went. He named the program Creeper, and designed it to travel between Tenex terminals on the early ARPANET, printing the message “I’M THE CREEPER: CATCH ME IF YOU CAN.”(Simon, 2019) n 1970s and 1980s, threats to network and technology existed at superficial levels. Malicious actors would access and read unauthorized data without major destructions. 20 Subsequently, the practice of computer security revolving around governance risk and compliance (GRC) therefore evolved separately from the history of computer security software. 21 Network breaches and malware did exist and were used for malicious ends during the early history of computers (Simon, 2019). 22 However, the Russians, for example, quickly began to deploy cyber power as a weapon. 20 In 1986, the German computer hacker Marcus Hess hacked an internet gateway in Berkeley, and used that connection to piggyback on the Arpanet. He hacked 400 military computers, including mainframes at the Pentagon, with the intent of selling their secrets to the KGB. He was only caught when an astronomer named Clifford Stoll detected the intrusion and deployed a honeypot technique. This is the kind of technological use we have today. People use technology at the expense of others in society (Simon, 2019). 11 7 Countries most affected by technology Misuse One of the countries that is majorly targeted by cube attackers and malicious actors is the United States and other Super powers in the world. The U.S has security data that can be used to damage he economy of the world. If they destroy the information systems and databases of the U.S, they will impact the world significantly. The United States has been for long targeted by malicious actors. The attackers intent to steal security information, deform or sell it to the enemies for destruction. 20 For Instance, In 1986, the German computer hacker Marcus Hess hacked an internet gateway in Berkeley, and used that connection to piggyback on the Arpanet. He hacked 400 military computers, including mainframes at the Pentagon, with the intent of selling their secrets to the KGB. In 9/22 attack, two planes was hijacked and used to bomb the twin towers which represented and hosted world economy. 12 7 Impact of Inappropriate use of Technology Loss of control systems Exfiltration of data loss of data integrity or confidentiality All these results to insecurity in the world and threatens people’s data and privacy as well as their financial and psychological results. Network breach and cybersecurity attacks collectively refer to the attempt to expose, alter, disable, destroy, steal, or gain unauthorized access to, or make unauthorized use of, confidential or private data or any other assets (Jensen, 2009). The attacks come in various forms, and they are intended to exploit unauthorized access to data, resources, and information. From the case scenario, the Financial Services Representative (FSR) has identified several network breach and cyber-attacks, including DDoS attacks, web defacements, sensitive data exfiltration, and others. One of the potential effects on the agency is the loss of system controls. Law enforcement agencies have a critical position in the consequences of cyber-attacks and threats - they are often on the forefront of investigations, interdiction, or enforcement. Consequently, they become the target of network threats and attacks. Losing control of systems can impact computer-aided dispatching, emergency alert systems, event tracking, the ability to monitor transportation and traffic infrastructure, intelligence dissemination, and operational plans set in motion (Quinn, 2018). APTs against law enforcement may take the form of malware, ransomware (eg, locking law enforcement out of video evidence), phishing, hacktivism, and “doxing” police officers by releasing home addresses, social security numbers, and sensitive family information (Quinn, 2018). Moreover, computer network attacks result in the loss of data integrity or confidentiality. When hackers access information systems of any institutions, whether law enforcement or financial services agencies, they often alter data to fit their purpose. For example, the Pikachu virus and the love bug of the 2000s propagated through infected users by sending themselves to all the users’ contacts in the Outlook address book. The viruses, mainly, the love bug, caused damage to the mailing systems of large corporations around the world, causing agencies such as the Pentagon, CIA, the British Parliament, and most large corporations to completely shut down their mail systems (Jensen, 2009). 13 Visual Presentation The study of more than 4,000 organizations across the US, UK, Germany, Spain, and the Netherlands found that most organizations are unprepared (cyber novices) and would be seriously impacted by a cyber attack. some shocking cyber statistics show that the average cost of a data breach is in the millions and that malicious attacks are on the rise, yet a whopping 73 percent of businesses are not ready to respond to a cyber attack (Jensen, 2009). 14 Civil War The world is experiencing terrorism and violence indifferent forms Civil war has been demonstrated in economic ways, physical and political It has left many people in distress, having lost all their property or even becoming refugees in other countries. Civil war has existed since time immemorial. It is advanced by majorly political and economic reasons. Terrorism and violence is an issue throughout the world that causes fear and insecurity, violence and death. Across the globe, terrorists attack innocent people, often without warning. This makes civilians feel defenseless in their everyday lives. Making national security a higher priority is key in combating terrorism, as well as promoting justice in wrongdoings to illustrate the enforcement of the law and the serious punishments for terror crimes. Violence can be found in the social, cultural and economic aspects of the world. Whether it is conflict that has broken out in a city, hatred targeted at a certain group of people or sexual harassment occurring on the street, violence is a preventable problem that has been an issue for longer than necessary. With continued work on behalf of the governments of all nations, as well as the individual citizens, the issue can be addressed and reduced (Findley & Young, 2018). 15 10 Countries most affected by Civil War The Middle East countries are majorly involved in civil wars. The wars claim hundreds of civilian lives The most affected countries in the world include Afghanistan Iraq And Syria The U.S has been involving its military in eradicating the Taliban group from the Afghan territory and rebuilding major intuitions of the country. 23 However, despite all of the measures undertaken, insurgency clashes and Taliban attacks continue to persist in the country. The current war situation in Afghanistan continues to claim civilian lives through bombings, crossfires, assassinations, and improvised explosive devices (Findley & Young, 2018) The long history of Iraq has been marred several times by the ravages of war. War and conflict also appears to haunt the country in the present time, as much of the country is in the grip of the Iraqi Civil War. In 2014, the Iraqi insurgency achieved the status of a Civil War when the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL, also known as ISIS) conquered major areas in northern Iraq. The ISIS militants, not limiting their actions to only Iraq, have also terrorized much of the world with their acts of extreme violence. This has forced countries like the U.S., Iran, Syria, and other countries to aid the Iraqi Government to resist the growth and spread of ISIS militants (Findley & Young, 2018). Currently, the gravity of the civil war situation in Syria is drawing attention from across the globe. The war started with the spread of the wave of Arab Spring protests in Syria in the early spring of 2011. The war has displaced more than 11 million Syrians from their homelands, and claimed the lives of at least 250,000 people. Although peace initiatives have been attempted, fighting continued on as of the end of 2017 (Findley and Young, 2018). 16 Impact of Civil War on World Population Civil war destroys health care and education institutions pulling the sectors of the country behind. Mass destruction of lives and resources leading to poverty Civil war destroys health care and education institutions pulling the sectors of the country behind. For instance, Sierra Leone was devastated by civil war, but is now slowly rebuilding itself into a stable democratic country. During the war, medical facilities in the country were looted and destroyed. This, along with most people living in rural areas, means that very few people in Sierra Leone have access to health care coverage. 4 Pregnant women have the legal right to free health care but the country is unable to provide it. 1 There are only about 22 physicians for every million people, and about 60% of the rural population does not have adequate access to clean drinking water (Matowe, Mori & Mawa, 2019). Civil war also causes masses of loss of lives. 23 According to Findley and Young (2018), around half a million Iraqis, including those killed directly or indirectly, lost their lives to warfare between 2003 and 2011. This is a huge loss to a country. 17 Visual Presentation After the World War II, countries have continued experiencing civil wars which have led to loss of many lives. However, the trend indicates a decreasing rate of deaths since 1940s. 23 the current U.S. efforts to support peace negotiations in Afghanistan and the Middle East seem remarkably fruitful even by historical standards. In the case of Middle East nations in which civil war is prevalent such as Afghanistan, “peace” is being negotiated without even the same cosmetic level of local government participation that occurred in Vietnam. It is being negotiated when there is no political stability to build upon, and no apparent prospect that the coming election can bring real unity or effective leadership. This is demonstrated by the continued reduction in number of deaths across the regions as compared to past years. 18 Conclusion Global environment is threatened by four critical factors Climate Change Poor health Technology misuse And Civil wars. The threats cause death, economic inactivity, loss of resources, and poor living standards. They also increase insecutiry and loss of privacy and confidentiality. In conclusion, climate change continues to pose threats and risks on the world population. More deaths, loss and drought ad famine is expected in different regions as climate change worsens. Besides, poor health which is contributed by poverty and pollution of water and air has ripped the world’s budget and development plans. Child mortality rate is high, while non-communicable diseases are causing mass deaths. On the other hand, inappropriate use of technology has rendered many agencies prone to cybersecurity and attacks. Some have already lost data and resources while many stand unprepared to counter-cyberattack. Similarly, civil wars have ripped apart the peaceful existence among people in the world making life even harder. The UN in conjunction with governments and NGOs should make effort to reduce the impact of the critical factors which threaten the global environment. This would make our mother planet more habitable than it is now. 19 References Banatvala, N.,. ., D., & Schneidman, M. (2019).
