Flood, fire: Depending upon the location, this can be a challenging factor to consider based on priority. If a facility resides in an area where flooding or fire is a seasonal thing, then the organization needs dedicated environments for its physical assets.
Power failure: An organization must consider power failure as a high priority. A power outage can happen at any place. An organization must mitigate threats by implementing power backup options. It can bring the overall downtime to the facility. Keeping IT infrastructure backup seems a good plan in this case where other location data centers can handle the load in case of a power outage at one place.
Apart from that, there can be other threats, including public disruption, theft, unauthorized access, etc. An organization must consider the above threats, which can reduce the organization’s overall performance or put its infrastructure at risk. Unauthorized access can bring vulnerabilities to the IT server. An organization must implement a physical security team. The security office should be responsible for the overall security of the premises.
Best practices for physical security
The role and responsibilities of the security officer should be exact. The security office should be innovative to identify and mitigate the security threats to the organization. The security officer cannot be everywhere at the same time. They need to implement a robust security surveillance system. Depending upon its need, the surveillance system should be placed at a different location. Portable physical security should be considered as a better option rather than making it permanently installed at some site. Access system should be updated on a regular basis. While implementing an access system, defense in depth concept should be considered, and a minimum level of security should be provided to the required entity (SDM, 2019).
