In business we would hope to have ethical leadership. Northouse (2018) describes ethic as being concerned with “values and morals an individual or society finds desirable or appropriate”. But from recent news articles we know not all leadership is ethical, especially when money or sex is involved. Northouse (2018) defines ethical leadership as “the influence of a moral person who moves others to do the right thing in the right was for the right reason”. The character of the leader plays important role on ethical leadership. I think I have a good character, but I also know that I do not always make the best ethical decisions.
Core Values
Based on the questionnaire, my number one core value is “duty ethics” (Northouse, 2018). According to Northouse (2018) duty ethics shows that I follow a set of “moral rules and do what is expected when facing an ethical dilemma”. Having been working for over 20 years there has been many ethical decisions faced. The next area I scored well in was the “utilitarian ethics”. Northouse (2018) states that the utilitarian ethics is “try to do what is best for the most people over all when facing an ethical dilemma”. As a team leader, I had an employee that would always come to work late. They managed to stay on track with their work, so I never addressed it. I finally had to address it when the other team members started to complain on why that person gets away with being late all the time. At that point I was forced to address it. I know it was not fair to not address it but if others did not complain, I had to do what was right for the greater good of the team.
Planning for your future role
For the future, I plan to continue to work towards higher levels of leadership in the healthcare field. In the healthcare field the leadership has to make ethical decisions for the employees as well as the patients. In my future roles, I will ensure that my decisions are fair and just for all involved. The information learned in this class, including ethical leadership, will make me a better leader. I will implement the lessons learned and continue to build on my character.
On top of the lessons learned from this class, I have seen unscrupulous leaders and know what I do not want to mirror. Ethics and ethical leadership should be in the forefront of all leadership decisions. Ethics should be a required yearly training for all leaders. Being humans, it’s easy to fall into not so ethical decisions, we must continue to assess ourselves to make sure our decisions are ethical, and we are displaying ethical leadership.
