summary and reflection about a post
By now you're thinking that the whole system is rigged and it's not in your favor. So why play? This is why you need to participate in this democratic system. The price of withdrawing is simply too high. Abdicating your civic responsibility means that those concerned more with their own interests than that of the public good will have their way.

For my article, I chose, “The Haves and Have-Nots of (Electrical) Power in California” this article caught my attention because over the week many people in Northern California have been dealing with having no electricity. This has had an economic impact on millions of people and some of them don't know what to do. This blackout has put people out of work and students out of school. Money is being lost and students are not getting their education which has made many people become worried. Considering wildfire season is approaching the power company said this blackout was necessary in order to prevent wildfires which is understandable because the past few years California has had one of the most deadliest and destructive wildfires yet. However, this has also caused millions of people to face major financial hardship. This affected both wealthy and poorer areas, however, in the article it mentions that many people used generators in order to keep their utilities running like their refrigerator, lights, charge their phones, etc. I see this as economic privilege, the wealthy are able to buy batteries, gas, generators to keep their utilities running, but how about those in poorer areas they have to keep their heads up and use what they have in order to get through this blackout. Millions of people were not prepared for this blackout as well as having an economic impact on their lives.
In my opinion, I have pros and cons about this whole blackout. I see this as a really effective way to prevent wildfires because these high winds mess with powerlines that can cause fires. This does lower the chance of a fire possibly happening. As the article mentions, this blackout was surely seen as an economic privilege. The wealthy are able to purchase and provide electricity for themselves using generators. People in low-class areas weren't able to do much about this situation because of money or other situations they might have had going on. I believe there should be some sort of company or program that will lend generators to those people who need them in times like these. This outage has caused one death because twelve minutes after the power outage a man that was on home oxygen stopped breathing. This affected millions of people especially those who are on oxygen or any other medical device that requires electricity. Overall, I believe if we ever have other blackouts they should be a little better planned out because millions of people were not prepared.
