The poor are more likely to suffer from health problems and to die at a younger age as compared to the rich. Studies have shown that the poor have higher levels of health risks and significantly limited access to healthcare. Their health is tied to their livelihood. A portion of the high healthcare costs is related to lack of access to healthcare, and a large portion is related to lack of insurance. Although improvement has been made in health outcomes, ethnic and racial minorities in the United States continue to experience disproportionate rates of morbidity and mortality due to poor health outcomes.
