My supervisor, Angela Hill, said “Kipsey has been very focused on each and every assignment that she has been given.” Although I love that she has no issues in my performance, I however, see so much room for growth within myself. I see room for learning and exploring things that have piqued my interest. While observing counseling sessions between the social worker and clients I have found that social work intrigues me. I am starting to feel as though a secondary degree would greatly benefit my knowledge and skills with addiction counseling. My mentor at my internship site has a masters in addiction recovery and social work. I can see how the two can go hand in hand. I would love to increase my knowledge in both areas. As far as growth, I help with what we call shower day. Shower day is for our “travelers” (homeless) to come in and get a hot shower, a hot cup of coffee, and wash 3 days’ worth of laundry. I have noticed that although I am helping them, I need to listen better. A great deal of our travelers have stories as to how they ended up homeless. I feel like even though I am listening, I am truly not listening to the words that they are not saying. They tend to make comments that I could use to get them too open more except I have only been listening at a surface level. My goal for growth is to learn to hear what is below the surface, words they are not verbally speaking. As a counselor this is very important. You must learn to hear what they are thinking in order to know how to help. I will work on this the remainder of my internship. I will also look closer for opportunities to pray for each of them as an individual.
