Persuasive

The purpose of this exercise is to use normal

persuasive elements in balance to make the best case for sermon ideas.

Elements Text: Philippians 1:12-18 (HSBC)

· Make sure sermon ideas are clear and well worded.

· Look for development material first in the text.

· Aim for a balanced appeal to the whole person.

· Make all development consistent with the idea.

· Test each segment for its intended function.

· Carefully plan the introduction and conclusion.

Write the division statements you are developing. You may use the sermon idea for planning development for the introduction and conclusion.

1. Believers must proclaim the Gospel of Jesus Christ to everyone. (vs. 13)

2. Believers must proclaim the Gospel of Jesus Christ, with confidence and boldness. (vs. 14)

3. Believers must proclaim the Gospel of Jesus Christ without fear. (vs. 14)

4. Believers must proclaim the Gospel of Jesus Christ with pure motives. (vs. 15)

5. Believers must proclaim the Gospel of Jesus Christ with love. (vs. 16)

Circle the word or two in your statement that carry the central concept of your idea. Write your core terms here:

Gospel

Proclaim

Write the ideas you have for development as explanation. Explanation aims for an understanding of the biblical and homiletical concepts by using background and interpretation material.

Paul uses this portion of Philippians to reassure his readers that his imprisonment was not affecting the advancing and proclaiming of the gospel. One reason was because even though Paul was in prison, that did not stop him from proclaiming the gospel of Jesus Christ to everyone who encountered him. He also assures the Philippians that his imprisonment has helped people to preach the gospel without fear but with confidence and boldness. He goes on to hit on the motives of the people, both pure and evil, but he ends by rejoicing because no matter the motives, the gospel is still being preached.

Note the development as illustration you will use. Illustration seeks to illuminate the ideas through the use of imagery and narrative to appeal to the imagination of the hearer.

Telling others about the Love of God and His redemption work is not something that one takes lightly. Jesus paid a price on the Cross, beaten and bruised so that man can be reconciled back to God, therefore, regardless of the circumstance, the gospel of Jesus needs to be proclaimed.

1. Even though Paul was in prison, that did not stop him from proclaiming the gospel of Jesus Christ, nor did it stop the gospel from being continuously being spread. Just like Jesus, Paul did not pick and choose who he wanted to spread the gospel to; instead, he proclaimed the gospel to everyone that he encountered.

2. Ephesians 3:12 tells us that our confidence and boldness comes through our faith in Jesus Christ. Therefore, if our faith is strong, we should be able to speak to people about Jesus without feeling insecure and unsure.

3. Fear is not of God. 2 Timothy 1:7 says, God has not given us a spirit of fear but of power, love, and a sound mind

4. Pure motives are important because our motives will determine the measure in which God chooses to bless us. While man looks at the appearance of things that we do, God looks at the heart and the reason why we do the things that we do (1 Samuel 16:7).

5. As Christians, we are supposed to display the image of Christ to others. Jesus told his disciples, in John 13:35, that people will know we are His disciples by the way that we love one another. Ephesians 4:15 also tells us to speak the truth in love

Plan your development as application. Application spells out the implications of the biblical idea and calls for change and action in a faith response.

1. We must proclaim the gospel of Jesus Christ to everyone we encounter so that they can enter into the knowledge of truth and become saved.

2. We must lay down our insecurities and proclaim the gospel in confidence and boldness.

3. We should not walk in fear because Jesus Christ is on our side and God has not given us a spirit of fear.

4. We must put away our own selfish motives, desires, and wants and proclaim the gospel with pure motives so that God can reward us.

5. We must set aside our attitudes, anger, unforgiveness, doubt, etc. and proclaim the gospel of Jesus Christ in a loving way because we love God.

Look back over your development notes and check for balance. Be careful about the amount of time a particular segment will take in delivery. Make changes as needed.
