Persuasive Speech Outline

I. INTRODUCTION

A. Diane was a 58 year old martial art instructor who was previously married for 18 years upon reentering the dating scene. She soon met a man named Philippe who she fell for who was very charming. After months of dating Diane suspected Philippe was cheating on her and soon after caught him red handed. At her next doctors appointment she learned that she had contracted an STD, not only that but it was HIV. Diane then began following Philippe and learned that he was dating 9 other women who had also received HIV from him. When enough evidence was gathered the women filled police reports against him. He was then prosecuted for six counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and is currently serving 45 years in prison ( OPRAH WINFREY SHOW OCTOBER 20TH 2009).

B. Sadly, Diane and the 9 other women are not alone, it is possible that as many as 40 million people are living with HIV today.

C. Today I am 1st going to talk to you about the problems, 2nd the causes, and 3rd about the solutions to fixing the problems of HIV.

II. PROBLEM

A. We are 1st going to be looking at the sexually transmitted disease HIV itself, and then 2nd those who are infected with HIV/AIDS.

B. ( AMERICAN HERITAGE COLLEGE DICTIONARY) HIV is a retrovirus that causes AIDS.

1. AIDS is a severe immunological disorder which causes an increase susceptibility to opportunistic infections and certain rare cancers.

C. So we will now look at those infected with HIV/AIDS.

1. ( AVERT.ORG) Almost 40 million people are living with HIV who are infected globally; almost half of them are women.

2. In America it is estimated that somewhere around 500,000 people are currently living with AIDS alone, not accounting for those who only have HIV.

TRANSITION (So now that I told you about the problem, I am now going to tell you about the causes.)

III. CAUSES

A. We are now going to 1ST going to look at how HIV can be spread and 2nd the most common way those who are uninfected become infected by it.

B. ( CDC.GOV) HIV can be spread through the use of sharing needles and syringes with one who is already living with HIV.

1. Through transfusions of infected blood or clotting factors.

2. Babies born to HIV-infected women may become infected before or during birth or through breast-feeding after birth.

C. We are going to look at the most common way HIV is spread.

1. ( HIV ESSENTIALS, PAUL SAX) Unprotected sex is the leading cause of how people contract HIV.

2. Most people will assume that their partners are STD free and then come to learn that they have contracted the disease.

3. HIV can be spread through having vaginal, anal, or oral sexual intercourse.

TRANSITION (So now that I told you about the causes, I am now going to tell you about the solutions.)

IV. SOLUTIONS

A. We are 1st going to look at solutions on a personal level, then 2nd on a governmental level.

B. ( SEXUALLY TRANSMITTED DISEASES, LOUISE GERDES) When one has a new partner and is going to have sexual intercourse you should both get tested for STDs first.

1. “Hooking up” with random people isn’t the best idea even when a condom is used because results are still inconclusive of whether they prevent the spreading of STDs and HIV.

C. The government should implement that every year or two people be tested for STDs and HIV to prevent them from spreading.

1. (ABSNEWS.COM) More money should then also be invested to Vaxgen who may have found a possible vaccine to prevent the infection of HIV. Though test results have shown positive results more data still needs to be collected.

V. CONCLUSION

A. So I have now 1st told you about the problem, 2nd the causes, and 3rd the solutions.

B. So Diane and the nine other women who contracted HIV from Philippe are not alone. HIV is a very serious and life threatening issue that must be taken very serious and should try and be prevented.

C. We can do something about this!.....Make sure you are more aware about the people you are having sexual intercourse with. Go get tested before fooling around with someone and make sure to tell this to all those who you know are sexually active.

D. "No one can lead our lives for us. We are responsible for our actions. So people—especially the younger generation---need to be very careful especially where safe sex is concerned." - Salman Ahmad
