Mid-range or grand nursing theories are broad, thus allowing generalizability when being implemented in practice. In this light, as Amendolair (2011) indicates, the effectiveness of Swanson Caring Theory in dealing with administrative issues is relative, as managers use the theory as a framework and must therefore develop innovative practices on their own, guided by the theory to enable them to address the issues they face.

For example, when it comes to staff performance, several issues affect the performance of nurses. These include poor working environment, the presence of patients with complex problems, staffing shortages, lack of recognition and net technologies among others. Nurses susceptibility to these stressors negatively affects their performance in relation to nursing outcome. By linking vulnerability to non-caring relationships, the Swanson Caring model nurses offer broad insight in the sense that the management must offer adequate support that ensure a caring environment in which nurses may be able to counter feelings of vulnerability, as well as high satisfaction levels that motivate them to work harder and improve patient safety (Awases, Bezuidenhout & Roos, 2013)

The kind of support that managers provide may vary ranging from building the nurses expertise knowledge to expanding management and leadership capacity. Nonetheless, the effectiveness of such support relies on how well it deals with the specific issues within the spectrum of Swanson Caring model. For instance, if the issue of performance relates to patients with complex issues, the management may see, to not only improve of nurses expertise in caring for such patients, but also encouraging teamwork and hiring and consultation from an expert hired to help nurses deal with the complex issues. The expert must be expected to be caring, patient and understanding to help build nurses confidence level and counter feeling of vulnerability in reference to being unable of caring of patients with complex issues (Chen & Chou, 2010).

In this light, to apply Swanson Theory in the administration to effectively deal with nursing performance issue, nurse managers/leaders must come up with strategies that specifically address the issue/issues of concern in nursing performance within the Swanson Theory of caring framework.

This week we are discussion Swanson’s theory of caring. Swanson’s theory of caring is a nursing theory that was designed with the view to giving nurses and caregivers a break when it came to the dispensation of their duties towards patients and at their workplaces (Cameron, 16). When it comes to dealing with administrative issues, Swanson’s caring theory implements a tracking mechanism called the “tracking yardstick “.

This tracker is designed to measure the efficiency of nurses towards provision of care as well as the satisfaction of the patients based on the service they received from the nursing staff. This aspect of tracking the progress of service towards the patients enables the hospital administration to have some sense of knowledge on how the nurses dispense their services. This theory’s approach to administration also encourages nurses and caregivers to put themselves in the shoes of their patients in order to have a sense of what the patients go through when receiving treatment (Goncalves et al, 136).
