IX. Assignments Participation / Discussion Activities: The atmosphere of the class is intended to be open, non-critical, professional, exploratory, and opinion-forming. The honest academic search for facts, current status, and investigation needs to occur in an open, risk-free type situation. Ask your questions, formulate your thoughts and learn to express them to the class, while being open to and respectful of others’ beliefs, values, and contributions.
This is not an attendance grade and is based on involvement and quality participation in all relevant activities of the class to enhance the learning environment for everyone in the class.
As relevant, online students should submit their Discussion Questions answers by Wednesday evening of each week or earlier, and then qualitatively and comprehensively respond to at least two colleagues’ postings by Sunday evening of each week in order to earn all the allotted participation points. A qualitative and comprehensive response can be at least 150 words and value-added.
Team Research Topic, Introduction and Reference List: As a team, choose one of the “100 Best Companies to Work for in America.” Fortune’s yearly list and related stories might be found at: https://www.greatplacetowork.com/best-companies-to- work-for
Determine and plan to investigate a specific human resource policy or practice and explain what is so special about this HR policy / practice; and explain how a selected organization is executing this policy that makes them a good role model for other firms. What other HR policies make this organization a good place to work? Identify and discuss one or two HR practices that have helped this organization and others to become a great place to work.
So, create a focused and descriptive Heading / Title for your research paper. Then provide a 2– 4-page introduction about this specific firm and/or HR practice(s) that gives organizations, industries, and/or managers a competitive advantage through their human resources. So, offer a detailed introduction about the HR best practice in an organization or industry by defining the HR concept, including actual examples or awards, and by providing academic literature on the selected HR topic. Under the sub-heading of References, provide a list of at least 10 complete sources / references that the team intends to use for the paper over the coming weeks. Note that the group may add or

subtract from the list after this assignment, so this is a work-in-progress. Keep in mind that you will continue to develop this topic into a comprehensive best practices research paper in HR as a team for the coming weeks until the end of the semester. Here is a recommended grade rubric guide for this assignment.

Mid-Term Exam: This exam will cover all the assigned readings and discussions thus far. About one hour will be allowed for completing the exam. The exam might be made up of a mix of essays as well as multiple choice, fill-in-the blanks, and other objective questions. It will be available online during the scheduled week and it must be completed by the due date.
Current Event Article: You need to identify, summarize, and discuss a human resources-related news report in a short- written assignment and class discussion. News and media discussed topics to look for can include hiring, firing, discrimination, HR laws, lawsuits, training, harassment, coaching, mentoring, compensation inequity, ethics, etc. that are in the news or media. These topics are frequently found in the business press. This assignment will make the course very current and will explore the many HR related issues that are constantly in the news. Keep in mind that for this individual assignment, you can work on a topic that is related to your team’s research area…. This way, you can use the content of your current event article and analysis for the team project as well (so you can be strategic in the selection of your current event topic).
Generated: 8/17/2026 Page 5 of 16
The written current event article summary should be about 3-6 pages in length (more pages are okay) plus an NSU cover sheet (as the first page for all assignments) along with the complete reference for this article in APA style at the end (the reference should provide the author’s name, year of publication, the title of the article, the source, and the URL link if you retrieve it from an online source). In addition, if the source is available online (such as SHRM.com, CNN.com or other news outlet), provide the retrieval or viewing date right before the URL.
Students should also prepare to discuss the current event topic with the class in 2-3 minutes (online students can post a 2-3 paragraph written summary of the article and its implications on the coming week’s discussion forum. OR: you can do a 2-3 minutes PPT presentation with voice-over, podcast or video summary and post it or the link on the coming week’s discussion forum). In your paper summary and discussion, include the following under relevant Headings / Subheadings:
1. Title of the article and author(s) 2. The key points of the article 3. Relevance of the article to human resources practice and literature (HR concept and/or theory).
You can link it to HR topics discussed in your textbook (cite ad reference the book as relevant). 4. What did you learn from the article? 5. Reference / Source of the news or article (all in the APA Style).
Note: This must be a CURRENT event (preferably this month, this year or last year), not something you find on a website from several years ago that simply refers to HR topic. See the recommended Grading Rubric for the assignment.

about this organization in executing certain HR practices. What HR policies make them an excellent place to work? Identify and discuss at least two or more of these best HR practices. The format of your paper should be as follows:
1. Cover page with a descriptive Heading / Title 2. Abstract and/or Introduction 3. Overview of the HR best practices topic (and/or company or industry) being studied 4. Distinctive HR Policies and Practices (an introduction followed by second-level sub-headings for
each policy and/or practice that you are going to discuss) 5. Implications / Recommendations for HR Practitioners in other companies / industries 6. Summary / Conclusion 7. References and Appendices, as relevant and needed.
The research paper should be of publishable quality and about 20-30 double-spaced pages in text length depending on the size of your team (you should write about 4-6 pages per team member), not including cover page or Appendices. Like all other assignments in this course, this paper must be written according to APA style and be carefully referenced.
Appropriate references: This is a research paper, and you must use at least ten or more different sources, in addition to textbooks; so be sure to pick a company about which a lot has been written. At least five or more of these sources should be published journal articles related to your topic and literature; the others may be organizational websites, government websites, or other reputable Internet sources.
The introduction of each paper should include a statement of the purpose and organization of the paper. Before your conclusion, you should have a section entitled “Implications for HR Practices in Other Companies” where you explain what other companies can learn from the company you are studying. This is the one section of the paper where you are analyzing what you have learned and extrapolating in order to make recommendations. You are not expected to have citations in this section. Instead, this section should show some original thinking and your own personal recommendations.
Be sure to use published journal articles as your sources, not less-reliable Internet web sites. Appropriate source journals include (among others) HR Magazine, Academy of Management Perspectives, Personnel Journal, Fortune, Human Resource Management, SAM Advanced Management Journal, Journal of Management, HR Focus, Human Resource Development Quarterly, The Journal of Applied Management and Entrepreneurship, The Journal of Leadership and Organizational Studies, and Organizational Dynamics. You may use the company’s website but do so sparingly and remember that what a company has on their own website may be positively biased in their favor.

Presentation of team research paper. Prepare a creative 10–12-minute presentation (power point with voice-over, video, podcast, handout, etc. that you deem relevant to your findings and the main learning points). Online students should post their presentation file (or video link) on the coming week’s discussion forum as early as possible but during the first two days of the week…. for others in the class to review it, learn from it, and comment on it. Of course, be ready to reply to any questions from the instructor and your classmates. In the presentation, summarize the main literature related to effective human resource practices, discuss the learning points of your research, and offer HR best practices recommendations that can be applied by managers and organizations in their firms. Make sure your presentation is a creative and productive learning experience for everyone in the class so students can review the main HR concepts and be better prepared for the final exam in the class. While a detailed creative Power Point summary file (with no sound) can be sufficient, keep in mind that meeting this minimum requirement can get you a “C” for the presentation grade, if you add explanations by speaking and recording your presentation over each slide, you can get a much higher grade. Remember that it is not that difficult or time-consuming to record your presentation. When working with a team, you can assign one person to do the presentation sound recording…. or all of you can do a few slides as you wish. It is much better for the audience’s learning to explain each slide with your sound and additional examples than the audience simply reading each slide’s content.
Recording a presentation. If you are using MS Power Point for your presentation, first you need to prepare all your slides along with your notes and additional comments for each bullet point or each topic. Your goal is to make the audience learn the concepts, theories, and practices as effectively as possible for any exam questions and for long-term application in the workplace. Keep in mind that the effective use of color and related visuals can enhance learning for the audience; so, make sure to have relevant visuals (avoid photos or visuals that do not relate to the content of each slide). Since your presentations should be useful to all professionals and the public, do not use anything that is copyrighted by others and make sure to cite all sources and provide complete references. Once your presentation is ready and finalized in terms of content, you can start recording. To begin recording your sound over each Power Point slide, you simply click on the “Slide Show” tab that is on top row toward the right side. Next, click on “Record Slide Show” and begin talking. Experiment with one or two slides first to make sure it works and that you can save it properly; then present and record all your slides. Once the speaking and explanations for all slides on the Power Point are complete, and then you can listen to it to make any adjustments, or even to redo a slide or two. And, when you are fully happy with your slide presentation and sound quality, you can share your “recorded file” with the class and/or your friends. In addition, if you wish, you can save this Power Point file as a movie by going to “Save As” and select “MPEG-4 Video” in “save as” type option area (instead of Power Point Presentation). Then, you can upload the movie file on social media (Facebook, YouTube, etc.) and share the link with everyone to watch. I hope that your presentation will be creative, fun, and helpful to everyone who watches it or listens to it. Good luck.
Final Exam: There will be a comprehensive examination for this course. About one hour will be allowed for completing the exam. The exam might be made up of a mix of essays as well as multiple choice, fill-in- the blanks, and other objective questions. It will be available online during the scheduled week and it must be completed by the due date.

In accordance with Title IX and other laws, NSU prohibits discrimination, including sex-based discrimination and discrimination towards pregnant/parenting students. If you or someone you know experiences sexual violence and/or sexual harassment, there are resources and options available. To learn more or to report an incident, please visit the NSU Title IX website at www.nova.edu/title-ix. Please be aware that your instructor is not a confidential resource, and the instructor is required to report any incident of sexual misconduct to the NSU Title IX Coordinator. Academic Integrity
The university is an academic community and expects its students to manifest a commitment to academic integrity through rigid observance of standards for academic honesty. The university can function properly only when its members adhere to clearly established goals and values. Accordingly, the academic standards are designed to ensure that the principles of academic honesty are upheld. The following acts violate the academic honesty standards:
Cheating — intentionally using or attempting to use unauthorized materials, information, or study aids in any academic exercise. Fabrication — intentional and unauthorized falsification or invention of any information or citation in an academic exercise. Facilitating Academic Dishonesty — intentionally or knowingly helping or attempting to help another to violate any provision of this code. Plagiarism — the adoption or reproduction of ideas, words, or statements of another person as one’s own without proper acknowledgment.
Students are expected to submit tests and assignments that they have completed without aid or assistance from other sources. Using sources to provide information without giving credit to the original source is dishonest. Students should avoid any impropriety or the appearance thereof in taking examinations or completing work in pursuance of their educational goals.
In support of the Code of Student Conduct, any violations of the Code of Student Conduct and Academic Responsibility and/or university policies and procedures may result in disciplinary action and/or criminal prosecution. Disciplinary action may include, but not limited to, failing the assignment and/or the entire course, academic probation, suspension, or expulsion and are administered initially by the faculty member, who is required to report any incident of misconduct to their department chair and the Office of the Assistant Dean. This code seeks to promote high standards of behavior and academic integrity by setting forth the responsibilities of students as members of the university community. Abiding by the code ensures a climate wherein all members of the university community can exercise their rights of membership. If students have questions about what constitutes academic misconduct before turning in an assignment,

they should see their Instructor or the NSU Student Handbook Accommodations for Students with Documented Disabilities: For more information about ADA policy, services, and procedures, students may contact the Office of Student Disability Services at 954- 262-7185. Each student with a disability should contact the Office of Student Disability Services prior to the commencement of classes to discuss his or her needs. Last Day to Withdraw: To withdraw from a course, it is not sufficient simply to stop attending class or to inform the instructor of your intention to withdraw. In accordance with college policy, contact your academic advisor to begin the withdrawal process. The last day to withdraw from a course is detailed on the applicable Academic Calendar. Email Policy: All email communications between students and faculty must be conducted via NSU email accounts. This requirement will assist NSU in communicating more effectively and protecting your privacy. Emails sent to faculty from non-NSU accounts will be returned to the sender with instructions to resend the communication from your NSU account. To set up an NSU email account or to get help with an existing account, visit the Computing Help Desk. You may also call the Help Desk at (954) 262-HELP or 1-800-541-6682, ext. HELP (4357). Student Course Evaluations: Student comment and feedback evaluating each college class is an important tool to evaluate program effectiveness. Participation in this process is a responsibility of each student. The university uses electronic evaluations that are completed online. It is important to the faculty and administration that students complete the online evaluation of each course. Students will be notified via NSU email accounts when the evaluation web link is opened (approximately the next-to-last week of the course). At the completion of the term and after instructors submit grades, instructors will receive an anonymous summary of the entire class's evaluation. Student names or ID numbers cannot be identified. Library Resources: Students conducting research for class assignments may use the Alvin Sherman Library, which provides extensive access to print and electronic books and academic/scholarly journals and hundreds of databases in a variety of subject areas with full-text articles, videos, reference books, statistics, company profiles, and general news. Reference librarians are available in person at the Reference Desk as well as by phone (954-262-4613), email, chat, text, and individual appointment to provide instruction on how to identify and use library resources. For times and details, visit the library's Ask a Librarian webpage. Library Guides and Tutorials are also available online. Roster Reconciliation Procedure for Students : Roster Reconciliation was put in place by Nova Southeastern University (NSU) in order to:
Comply with federal regulations on the timely return of Title IV Financial Aid. Encourage students to actively participate in their classes beginning with week one.
How it works: In the second week of 8- and 16-week courses, your course instructor is required to reconcile the course roster by automated reporting to the Registrar who is participating and who is not participating in their course. Students who are reported as not participating are automatically dropped from the course in week three. What do you have to do? Attend class. Attendance is defined as: For an On-Campus (live) Class:
Physically attend class where there is an opportunity to directly interact with the faculty member and classmates
On-Line Class (do one or more of the following academically related activities assigned for week one): Participate in an online discussion (discussion board) about academic matters Submit an academic assignment Take an exam or quiz, an interactive tutorial, or computer assisted instruction Attend a study group that is assigned by the course instructor Initiate contact with the course instructor to ask a question about the academic studies in the course For online classes that have an on-campus component: physically attend class where there is an opportunity to directly interact with the course instructor and classmates
Academically related activities do not include activities where the student may be present but not academically engaged in an online class, such as:
Reading the syllabus Logging into an online class without active participation
Generated: 8/17/2026 Page 11 of 16
Participating in academic counseling or advising Important Note: if the course is added during week one, it is the responsibility of the student to read the syllabus and contact the course instructor to review instructions for week one assignment(s) and complete those assignment(s) so as not to be dropped from the class.
