Papers I and II Feedback Assignment
1). For Paper I and Paper II, where (and why!) did you lose the most points? For example, did you lose the most points based on writing quality, APA formatting, not fully describing the materials/articles, turning in the paper late, etc. Write a separate answer for Papers I and II.
For Paper I, I lost the most points in the "Writing: General" category due to some grammatical and syntactical errors that affected the overall clarity of the paper. Additionally, I lost points in the "APA: First Page" category because of minor errors in formatting the header and page number.
For Paper II, the section where I lost the most points was in "Results" because I omitted some analyses and did not appropriately report the manipulation check and ANOVA. Additionally, I lost points in the "Tables" section because I did not include some tables and made errors in their presentation.
2). What was the best piece of advice you received in your feedback in each paper, and what made this significant (or important) for you? What advice (if any) did you disagree with, and why?
In Paper I, the best advice I received was to improve the transition from the body to the conclusion while previewing the study in the conclusion paragraph. This advice was significant because it helped me understand the importance of creating a cohesive flow throughout the paper and providing a clear summary of the study's findings and implications. In Paper II, the best advice I received was to ensure thorough reporting of demographic characteristics and descriptive statistics, including means, standard deviations, and frequencies. This advice was significant because it highlighted the importance of providing comprehensive information to support the study's results and interpretations.
On advice I disagreed with, in Paper I, I initially disagreed with the suggestion to improve the introduction's clarity. However, upon reflection, I realized that enhancing the introduction's clarity could make the paper more engaging and accessible to readers. In Paper II, I disagreed with the feedback on the formatting of subheadings. However, after reviewing the APA guidelines, I understood the importance of adhering to specific formatting requirements for consistency and clarity in academic writing.
3). What specifically will you do differently as you prepare to write Paper III? For example, will you visit your instructor’s office hours, make an appointment with the writing center, make sure you check “yes” to everything on the paper checklist, look over the example paper, or read aloud other elements of your paper to make sure the writing is smooth and easy to read, etc.? You can do multiple things, of course, but make sure to follow-through with your strategies!
To improve Paper III, I will take several proactive steps. I will schedule a meeting with my instructor to discuss the feedback received on Papers I and II, seeking clarification on areas needing improvement and guidance on how to address them effectively. This will be crucial for several reasons. First, it allows for a clear understanding of specific areas where improvement is needed, ensuring that subsequent papers meet the expectations outlined by the instructor. Second, it provides an opportunity to receive personalized guidance on effectively addressing identified weaknesses, thereby enhancing the quality of future submissions. Lastly, it demonstrates a proactive approach to learning and improvement, indicating to the instructor a genuine commitment to academic success and growth.
4). If you could change one thing about your Paper I that would make it better, what would it be? How will you use that as you revise Paper I for Paper III? What about Paper II? How could you change Paper II to make it better for its inclusion in Paper III?
For Paper I, I would improve the analysis and connections made between the articles and the hypothesis. This would involve providing more critical and relevant insights into how the articles support or refute the hypothesis and ensuring that the analysis is thorough and coherent. To revise Paper I for Paper III, I will conduct a more in-depth analysis of the the references, making stronger connections to the hypothesis and providing clearer explanations of the findings.
As for Paper II, I would enhance the clarity and organization of the results section. This would involve ensuring that all analyses are clearly presented, including appropriate statistical tests and results, and thoroughly explaining the findings. Additionally, I would improve the discussion section by offering more insightful interpretations of the results and discussing their implications in greater depth. To revise Paper II for its inclusion in Paper III, I will focus on refining the results and discussion sections to ensure they are well-structured, coherent, and effectively contribute to the overall argument of the paper.
5). What connections should there be between the methods and results sections from Paper II? Sometimes students have no idea what I mean here, but keep in mind that there is a big connection between what you describe in the methods section and what you look at in the results section. Think about that connection.
The methods section in Paper II outlines the procedures and techniques employed to collect and analyze data, providing a roadmap for understanding how the research was conducted. This information directly influences the results section, as it sets the foundation for interpreting the findings and understanding their significance within the context of the study's objectives. Therefore, a clear and coherent link between the methods and results sections is essential for readers to comprehend the research process and the implications of the study's outcomes.
6). Look carefully at your use of APA format for your in-text citations and references in Paper I (and Paper II you cited in that paper). Did you have any APA errors? If so, is there an error you seemed to make more than once? Are there any comments your grader made about your APA formatting that surprised you? What changes to you think are necessary as you revise your papers for Paper III? Write 1-2 sentences commenting on your analysis and/or what you intend to do with regard to APA formatting in future papers (e.g., “I will review the APA formatting powerpoint and make any changes as needed,” or “Everything seemed fine to me already” or “I’ll visit APA formatting websites like the Owl Purdue site to make sure my APA format is correct).
Upon reviewing my papers, I noticed a few APA errors, particularly in the formatting of page numbers and the alignment of headers. I seemed to consistently struggle with maintaining correct alignment throughout the document. My grader's comments highlighted these errors, reminding me of the importance of meticulous attention to APA guidelines. To address these issues in Paper III, I plan to carefully review the APA formatting PowerPoint and seek additional resources, such as the Owl Purdue site, to ensure accuracy in my citations and references. 7). Now, carefully examine your papers for specific language/editing issues. I want you to focus on at least one to three writing issues that you are now aware of—either issues that your grader mentioned in your paper feedback on your previous papers and/or issues you know you struggle with. Again, write a 1-2 sentence analysis that specifies what you looked for, what you found, and how you plan to make changes for those writing issues as you revise for future papers.
In reviewing my papers, I identified a recurring issue with wordiness and redundancy in my writing. I tend to use unnecessary phrases that can clutter my sentences and detract from clarity. To address this, I will practice concise writing techniques, such as eliminating redundant words and phrases, during the revision process for future papers. 8). Before you turned in Paper I, you completed the “Read Aloud Assignment” where you read the first page of your paper to another person and received some feedback from them. I want you to do that again for a new section of either Paper I or Paper II. If you like, you can re-read the first page of your Paper I aloud again to see if the changes you made seem to improve the flow and content of that page, but I’d prefer you take a different section of your paper. Take notes on any changes you make while reading aloud. If you want, return to the Short Lab Assignment #4 instructions and ask your listener to once again give you rating feedback on this follow-up read aloud activity. Write 1-2 sentences about what you learned from doing this and the types of things you changed, if any (e.g., “I found missing words”; “I found typos”; “I realized some of my sentences were too long & wordy”; “I realized my paper is already perfect”; etc.).
After completing the read-aloud assignment with a new section of my Paper I, I realized that some sentences were too convoluted and needed simplification for better clarity. Additionally, I noticed a few missing transition words that hindered the flow of ideas. Making these adjustments improved the overall readability and coherence of the section.
9). I want you to give me some information into what it feels like writing papers for this course. Do you find writing for this course easy or hard? What would make it easier for you? What tools do you find most useful in the course (e.g. the example papers, the paper instructions, the grade rubrics, the paper checklists, the paper clinics, etc.). Can you think of any tools not already available that you think would be beneficial for either you or for future semesters?
Writing papers for this course has been challenging and rewarding. While I appreciate the opportunity to engage deeply with the course material and develop critical thinking skills, I often find the process demanding due to the need for clarity, academic rigor, and effective communication. To make it easier for me, I would benefit from more interactive sessions where I can receive real-time feedback, such as paper clinics or writing workshops. Additionally, having access to more examples of well-written papers, detailed explanations of common writing issues, and interactive tools like writing prompts tailored to the course topics would enhance my learning experience and improve my writing skills.
10). Finally, do you have any specific questions about either language or APA format that you want to raise in class or ask me individually? List them here. If not, say “None.”
