This assignment is a type of narrative essay that requires you to critically think about the way you engage with others and the way you present yourself either in-person or online to others. You might want to think about the communities where you interact with others too (i.e. school, church, work, and so on) and the expectations of those communities. For example, when you are at work, how are you expected to behave and interact with others?
The Assignment:
Pay special attention to the section in chapter 1 on pages 22-24 (the last few pages of the chapter). This section clearly states everything you need to know in order to complete this assignment, so I am not going to repeat everything in this handout. However, in the section title “Format of the Assignment,” they suggest that “you can do this assignment as the form of an essay (with photos), a personal profile or dossier, or a short video blog” (24). I am requiring you to write an essay for this assignment. If you pick another format, then I will not grade it and you will automatically receive a zero. I am not requiring that you include visuals with your essay though. It is optional. If you do decide to include a photo or another visual aid, you can only include 1 image. No more or you will be penalized. The visual image should enhance your essay, so consider it carefully. A simple head shot doesn’t add to your narrative. Think of the image as part of the story you are telling. Perhaps a photo showing you in action in your community, space, or workplace.
Provide “telling details” so that your main “characters” (self and others) are developed and believable. Don’t forget to consider your 5 senses when necessary. Make the reader: see, hear, smell, taste, feel what you are trying to convey.
This essay should offer some insight about your rhetorical self. In other words, what did you learn about yourself when you really stopped and thought about your presentation and interaction with others within a specific community? How did you change/alter your appearance? Mannerisms? Language?
You should focus the essay around a strong thesis having to do with this insight; however, with a narrative essay, you may choose to save the thesis for the end or omit it from the actual essay if you feel that articulating it is unnecessary or that it would weaken the reader’s sense of discovery. You need to make sure, though, that your essay does have a provocative thesis (a well-focused, main point), whether articulated or implied, and that all sections of the essay support and develop the thesis. Make sure your essay doesn’t read like a jumble list. In other words, make sure your essay is organized and focused. A thesis, either stated or implied, will help you plan and organize your essay.
This is not a listing type essay (my name is, I was born, I have…). Make sure to thoroughly read chapter 1 in part 1 in the book and the sample essays to help you with this assignment.
You should pick one “mode of self-presentation” from the 5 bullets (23) and go from there to develop your essay.
Plagiarism: Please review my policy on plagiarism. If you wrote a similar paper for another class and turned it in, it is considered self-plagiarism and you will fail the assignment. It does not matter if you received a grade for the previous assignment or not. Turning in an assignment twice for two different classes is self-plagiarism. Here is a link to help you understand self-plagiarism: https://www.aje.com/en/arc/self-plagiarism-how-to-define-it-and-why-to-avoid-it/
The best way to avoid this issue is to write a new essay.
MLA: Your paper should follow MLA (12 point font, Times New Roman) and such. Review section on syllabus about assignments. If you do not follow MLA, you will be penalized. Review the MLA chapter in the book and see the OWL website for information on MLA: https://owl.purdue.edu/
Due Date: See weekly schedule, eLearn calendar, dropbox, and/or syllabus.
