Definition Paper
Definition plays an important part in the development of most expository essays. Without a clear definition of terms, the reader will have only a vague idea of what you are writing about. By specifically defining what it is you are explaining, you will be:
1) calling to attention certain problems or concepts (“What Is Poverty?” handout);
2) hopefully dispelling a currently popular definition that may either prove to be wrong or overtly biased and underdeveloped (“Obama vs Marx” McH textbook).
For your Paper #1 assignment, you are to define the following word:
Rebellious or Independence
Your university-level, minimum 5-paragraph paper will eventually be 4-6 pages in length, must have a Works Cited page (not included in the 4-6 page requirement), and must have 4-6 quotes from outside sources—no dictionary, Wikipedia, or non-researched based website like Quotations.com will be accepted.
For you to be successful in this assignment, you must follow these criteria:
1) You must define the word but you cannot quote directly or indirectly from a dictionary. Your definition must come from your understanding of the word with perhaps some dictionary clarification. You are encouraged to create a new definition of the word, so long as it isn't weird or offensive. This paragraph may be written following any of these two methods: 1-show the development of your definition from general to specific, or 2- show how most people define the word, but then show how you will define it (contrast method). This is your introduction paragraph.
2) Once the word has been defined in the introduction, you must find individuals who embody your definition. In other words, who do you know presently, historically, and personally who fits your definition. By order of importance (good, better, best), share who these individuals are and show both HOW and WHY they fit your definition. These are you body paragraphs.
· The present individual must be within the past 20 years and must be someone who can be researched.
· The past individual must be somebody who is deceased and must be someone who can be researched.
· The personal individual cannot be a blood family relative or someone you have strong feelings for (love or hate). It can be a neighbor, co-worker, extended family member, classmate, etc. This person does not need to someone who can be researched.3)
3) Since this is a university-level paper, you must employ primary sources to do research on both defining your word and locating evidence that your three individuals embody your definition. Newspapers, magazines, textbooks, biographies, autobiographies, and reliable Internet sources are encouraged.
4) Due dates for First Drafts, Peer Editing, Second Drafts, and Final Drafts are stated on Con Canvas Assignments.
