Evidence based practice gives nurses a method to critically evaluate and scientifically prove evidence to provide improved patient care along with delivery of quality healthcare across all geographic boarders (Stevens, 2013). EBP incorporates current up-to-date knowledge, in order to improve patient outcomes, and reduce illogical variations in care (Stevens, 2013). EBP is essential for the BSN nurse to be educated on deliver of patient-centered care, emphasizing core competencies in EBP with quality improvement approaches, and informatics (Stevens, 2013). BSN nurses will need to have EBP integrated into education, related to the roles of leadership that the BSN degree prepared nurse is expected to fill (Stevens, 2013).
School based health clinics have become an important part of health care delivery in our nation, and provides healthcare services for our youth of all ages, financial backgrounds, cultural, and geographic boarders (AAP, 2012). Schools already provide several critical health services, including triage and management of medical emergencies; medication delivery; services for youth with special health care needs; referral of common health problems, such as injury, asthma, and behavioral and emotional difficulties; and health screenings, and education over disease prevention (AAP, 2012). One way that I will integrate evidence in the school setting is provide medical resources for chronic illnesses. School aged children with chronic illnesses need to have a medical resource and care, which is based on EBP, at school that will allow them to participate in the daily school activities to reach their academic goals (AAP, 2012). Another way to integrate evidence in the school health setting is to use EBP in order to provide the student the care needed to obtain optimal health, reduce absenteeism, and allow students to reach their educational goals, while validating the nursing care (AAP, 2012).
Obstacles that could challenge the integration of EBP in my practice is time was not allowed during work hours to go to the library or read research papers, which would cause the nurse to take work home to work on researching topics. One solution to this obstacle is to be allotted protected time at work for research, while an aide helps cover the clinic. Another obstacle that could possibly affect the integration of evidence into practice might be to assure that the necessary resources, funds, and time were available for research utilization (Stevens, 2013). Steps in helping with necessary resources and any funding that might be involved, could be presented to stakeholder, and administration for approval to have up-to-date current practice, and thus improve quality outcomes to the students we serve.
