IHS 2220 Interview responses specifics and rubric- update 2018.pdf (201.142 KB)

Please read the following interview, respond to the questions, in a cohesive submission that is at least one page in length. Please read the attached rubric for more guidance.  No late submissions will be accepted ; you can however submit this assignment early.

FYI-- I was fortunate to have some time to speak with Matilda the last time she visited Athens.  Because this was not a planned interview I was not able to record it or have a vast amount of background information on Matilda, or her cultural background, before the interview.  We talked before and after the interview and I felt the interview provided valuable information so that is why I chose to include it in this course. When you are addressing the question regarding "aspects that could have been addressed in a more culturally competent manner" you are to address the content of the interview not how the interview was conducted.  You are NOT to evaluate the interviewer, the interviewee, or how the interview was conducted; this is missing the point of the assignment.  Pay attention to what the person being interviewed says about cultural competency and their experiences, this assignment is to increase your awareness.

I originally developed this course and have instructed it for 9 years now, along with two other instructors, and we are all very concerned about the change in submissions where students are so quick to react and assume the worse in people so I feel the need to reach out to all of you and work towards a change in thought and ask you to listen, gain, and widen your perspective.

Please read the context and all of the instructions for the interview with Matilda.  I added this interview to the course so that you all could gain from a healthcare professional who has experienced cultural nuances.  I have made it very clear you are not to evaluate how the interview was conducted or place judgement on the various examples addressed, this is very clearly stated in the directions and context provided with the interview.  You are missing the point of this assignment if you focus on what I asked and how I asked it or how Matilda responded and if she is culturally competent; you are to focus on the content and expectations, read what Matilda says and please do not assume that the professor and the patient are racist or otherwise they responded to Matilda from their perspective or from ignorance not malicious intent so what could have been better, use the terms provided in the course, and please don't jump to the extreme that is not the objective for any of the assignments in this course.

I know we live in a very challenging world but it does not help if everyone reacts and doesn't listen or responds inappropriately.  To educate others is key passing ultimate judgement doesn't do anyone any favors and none of us are perfect and none of us are culturally competent but if we ask questions and desire to learn the world will change. I want you to gain from this course so you can apply this in the real world; if everyone assumes or jumps to worse case scenarios with all of these assessments then no one listens and no one learns.  I am and will continue to deduct points for responses that reflect these aspects as you will not gain if you do not follow the expectations and understand the application of the content.

Thank you for taking time to read this and I do hope you all listen, if you have questions or concerns email me.
