I. Introduction (Purpose)
Sunny Learning Center (SLC) which is located at Richmond district in San Francisco devotes itself to the education career by helping students achieve academic success. In this learning center, our employees not only provide after-school tutoring, but also offer foreign language and SAT practice courses. SLC welcomes all k-12 grade students in the bay area and serves with passion based on each student’s unique goal and needs.
II. Mission Statement
Sunny Learning Center aims to be one of the bay area’s leading education service providers that helps students achieve academic success.
At Sunny, our mission is to develop each student’s full potential. Our employees consider this mission statement a big commitment to our customers and deliver on this commitment by striving to passionately provide academic assistance to students. We seek to develop the most innovative and highest quality education service that motivates students to study hard and facilitates to enjoy the learning process.
III. Market Analysis
According to the survey of prevalence of tutoring in 23 developing and developed countries from the year of 1990 to 2005 (including the U.S.), “25–90 percent of students at certain levels of education are receiving or recently received private tutoring” (Dang & Rogers, 2008). The result shows lots of students worldwide rely on tutoring service for their study. Furthermore, a study in the American Educational Research Journal (AERJ) compared findings from dozens of different studies on tutoring found that the average tutored student did better than two-thirds of the untutored students (AERJ). Tutoring service can dramatically boost students’ grade. In addition to school-subject tutoring, SLC also provides SAT and foreign language classes due to their importance in the academic world. According to the NACAS (National Association for College Admissions Counseling) study, “More than one third of postsecondary institutions agreed that an improvement on the SAT Math section of 20 points, or a score increase on the SAT-CR of 10 points, would ‘significantly improve student’s likelihood of admission” (NACAS, 2012). The higher SAT score students get, the more chance they get admission from a college. Additionally, “for the SAT exam where students who worked with private tutors received 10-20 points higher on average for subject specific sections” (NACAS, 2012). Next, study a foreign language is beneficial to students in terms of obtaining new academic skills and career opportunities. For example, According to the study of LEARN NC, “students who have studied a foreign language develop greater cognitive skills in such areas as mental flexibility, creativity, divergent thinking and higher order thinking skills” (Morris). Furthermore, the skill of speaking a foreign language is considered an asset in the workplace of tomorrow: workers would be asked to cooperate with colleagues in other countries, languages, and cultures (Morris). Chinese (Mandarin or Cantonese) as a foreign language class would be provided in SLC due to its popularity in the bay area. According to the statistics of the MLA language map in California, Chinese (including Cantonese and Mandarin) is the second most common language spoken in San Francisco after English (Asya, 2014). Learning Center in San Francisco is crucial to stay competitive with other tutoring businesses in the bay area.-very good so far!
