· Character Description

Compare between “The Mona Lisa” by Leonardo da Vinci and “Portrait of Maddalena Doni” by Rapheal.

· Leonardo Da Vinci (1452) was a famous Italian artist and he was also mathematician, inventor, and writer. Some his famous paintings: "The Last Supper", "Madonna of the Rocks", and "Mona Lisa".

· The Mona Lisa was painted between 1503 and 1519, in Florence, it’s now known as The Louvre, in Paris

· Raphael (1483) lived in Urbino, Italy. He was Perugino's apprentice.

· Portrait of Maddalena Doni was painted in 1506.

· Comparison Comment by Vu Le: This is a good start ! But you should develop the points of comparison more. Most importantly, you address social themes in regards to Maddalena, and themes about nature and humanity in regards to the Mona Lisa. Are these aspects not present in the other work? You should also be more specific about what you mean with respect to social themes, nature, humanity, and authority- and what in the artwork depicts them? You should discuss more the influence of the Mona Lisa on the Maddalena- the Maddalena clearly seems like a response or homage to the Mona Lisa. How does that make the changes Raphael made significant?

· The paintings are oil painting on wood panel.

· These paintings are both portraits of women. They are wearing dresses. Mona is wearing a simple dress, Maddalena wears a bright dress with highlight red. It seems to be expensive.

· On the Mona, the painting is darker than Maddalena. The difference is the contrast between light and shade to make depth. Repheal uses the bright color in his work with the contrast between red and dark blue to highlight the portrait.

· Mona Lisa is smiling with loving eyes, but Maddalena’s face looks solemn and luxurious.

· Maddalena is almost like the Mona Lisa that where the hands are placed on top of one another. This is reason Repheal’s work is influenced by Da Vinci.

· Both of portrait has a landscaped background with hills and trees. The two authors are interested in perspective. The landscapes are far away from viewers

· The Maddalena shows that she is wealth because she wears an expensive chain with big gems and a small string of expensive polished jet around her neck. On her fingers, she wears many rings. These points reveal that her family is high level which describes her social themes behind this painting. Comment by Vu Le: Needs elaboration. What social themes?

· The curves of Mona’s hair and clothing were created through sfumato technique. She stands front of the nature view with faint smiling. The overall harmony in this painting is achieved by linking humanity and majestic nature without authority. Comment by Vu Le: Needs a definition- assume a layperson audience. Also need to cite a source for this specialized term. Comment by Vu Le: How is this accomplished? How are they harmonious? What makes the image lack authority?
