Limiting the topic and performing preliminary research At Begin thinking about a topic for your research paper. Choose a topic that you are very interested in learning more about--anything goes! Your topic can be about a current event, a celebrity, an event in history, a hobby, a scientific discovery, a health issue--ANYTHING that you are truly interested in learning more about. As you research your topic, consider ONE SPECIFIC QUESTION you would like to be able to answer in your essay. The answer to that question will be your thesis. (We will have more on that later!) Here are some examples of specific questions former students have sought to answer: How did Charles Schultz come up with the personality for Charlie Brown's dog, Snoopy, in the comic strip "Peanuts"? Why was the Battle of Gettysburg the turning point that caused the South to lose the Civil War? Who killed the Red Baron in WWI? • How does the corona virus differ from the flu? • Why are art critics so intrigued with Mona Lisa's smile? G
